Entry requirements

Students will normally have a 2:1 classification in a sport related degree.

Students who hold a sport-related degree classification of either 2:2 (or below), or, a non-sport related degree will be considered on a case by case basis and may be required to submit a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate coaching experience.

The IELTS score for international applicants is 6.5 (with no less than 5.5 in each component). Other English Language qualifications will be considered. For more information please click here.

Due to the nature of the programme, all students must complete a criminal records disclosure check prior to the start of the course.

Mature Students

We value diversity in our student body and applications from mature students are very welcome. Students with few or no formal qualifications should contact the Admissions Office. Please provide Admissions with details of your age, any work undertaken, including caring or organised voluntary work, and any other relevant experience.

Accreditation of Prior Learning

Candidates with an acceptable academic background and/or relevant work experience may apply for Accreditation of prior learning (APL) and experience (APEL). It is advisable for candidates to discuss this with the Course Leader initially. The programmes follow our Policy for Accreditation of Prior Learning.

What will you study?

Our courses are informed by research and current developments in the discipline and feedback from students, external examiners and employers. Modules do therefore change periodically in the interests of keeping the course relevant and reflecting best practice. The most up-to-date information will be available to you once you have accepted a place and registered for the course. If there are insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, this might not be offered, but we will advise you as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative.

How will you be taught?

Teaching and Learning

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.

A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.


You are taught through a combination of workshops, seminars and practical sessions. In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are throughout the academic year.

Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 8-12 contact hours of teaching if you are studying full-time. The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and towards the end of the programme you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 25 hours of personal self-study per week if you are studying full-time. Typically, this will involve reading, data collection, small group working and observation of coaching sessions.

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.

Teaching staff

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes Dr Don Vinson, Dr Andy Cale, Dr Andrea Faull and Dr Julia West.

Teaching is informed by the research and consultancy, and 100 per cent of course lecturers have a higher education teaching qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. You can learn more about the staff by visiting our staff profiles.


The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or 'formative' assignments. Each module has one or more formal or 'summative' assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

Assessment methods include eportfolios, presentations, essays and frequent opportunities to negotiate assessment task formats.

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken.


You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

We aim to provide you with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.


Dr Julia West

Julia West has a keen interest in sport and performance. She played football for a number of years in the Women’s premiership as goal keeper for different clubs and earned her England University caps against America, Scotland and Wales.

Julia has just completed her PhD in situational motivation which evolved from irritating questions related to her experiences coaching goal keepers. Julia likes to include challenging concepts in her teaching approach which have proved fun and successful providing opportunities for great ideas and discussions.


Dr Andy Cale

Andy has a wide and vast experience in Higher Education, Sports Coaching and Sports Psychology. He has worked in Professional Football as a Sports Psychologist, has managed and coached in the Champions League.

Andy has worked for the Football Association as Head of Player Development and Research and worked as a Senior Football Manager in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. He uses all these different experiences to help students learn and develop as people and coaches.


Dr Don Vinson

Don is an academic with a passion for sport and believes sport can be so exciting, unifying and intriguing; Don is passionate about learning how to develop sport as a force for societal and personal enrichment.

Don's specialist area is sports coaching; he is passionate about non-linear, innovative, approaches to this discipline and is driven by balancing his roles as teacher, researcher and practitioner.


Dr Andrea Faull

Having worked as a mental skills coach for several years with Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Game level athletes, Andrea likes to bring her applied experiences to the classroom environment.

Where possible, Andrea is still actively involved in supporting athletes and coaches of all ages, abilities and across a wide range of sports.

How much will it cost?

Postgraduate loans

The Government will provide a loan of up to £10,609 per student for postgraduate Masters study. It will be at your own discretion whether the loan is used towards fees, maintenance or other costs.
