Your quick packing checklist for moving to the UK

Packing for university hits differently when you're packing for an entirely new country. Instead of just deciding which hoodie to bring, you suddenly realise you’re choosing what your new life will start with.

When I was preparing to move to the UK, I kept wondering what was actually useful, what I would regret not packing and what would only take up suitcase space.

So here is a simple guide based on what really matters, what you will use and what you can easily buy once you arrive in Worcester.

Start with the essentials

Some things are much easier to sort out once you reach the UK, but a few essentials are worth packing before you travel.

  • Passport, visa, CAS and all important documents
  • A folder to keep your paperwork organised
  • Copies (digital and physical) of your accommodation details
  • Offer letter, enrolment instructions and university contacts
  • A small amount of UK currency for the first day

Weather-appropriate clothing

The UK weather has a mind of its own, so pack clothes you can layer.

  • A warm jacket for autumn and winter
  • Hoodies, jumpers and long-sleeve tops
  • A raincoat or waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable everyday wear
  • A couple of formal outfits for events or part-time job interviews
  • Comfy walking shoes

Don’t stress about bringing everything. Worcester has plenty of places to shop once you settle in.

Academic and study supplies

Bring only the basics if you absolutely need it. You can buy the rest locally.

  • Pens, pencils, highlighters
  • Notebooks
  • A diary or planner
  • A backpack for classes

Most stationery is cheaper and easier to buy in the UK.

Electronics and gadgets

Pack the everyday essentials you know you’ll use.

  • Laptop and charger
  • Plug adapters (UK uses Type G plugs)
  • Phone and charger
  • Power bank
  • Headphones or earphones

You can buy most gadgets here if you forget something.

Food and comfort items

A few familiar things can really help during your first days.

  • Your favourite spices or instant mixes
  • Snacks you love
  • Cultural or religious items
  • A few ready-to-eat meals
  • Photos or small personal keepsakes

Worcester has many international stores too, so you will find a lot of your favourite ingredients here.

Medicine and personal care

Bring what you use regularly or what may be difficult to find in the UK.

  • Basic medicines
  • Prescription medication with a doctor’s note
  • Toiletries for the first week
  • Essential skincare or haircare products you prefer

Pharmacies like Boots and Superdrug have everything else.

What you don’t need to pack

Avoid filling your suitcase with things you can buy here.

  • Bedding
  • Large kitchen items
  • Too many jackets or shoes
  • Full-size toiletries
  • Heavy books or study materials

Save space for things that matter.

A helpful personal tip

Pack a small “first-night” bag in your backpack with one outfit, toiletries, a charger and a snack. It’s a lifesaver if your luggage arrives late or you’re too tired to unpack.

Packing for university doesn’t need to be stressful. Bring the essentials, add a few comfort items and leave space for things you’ll buy once you settle in.

Worcester has everything you need, and you’ll learn what works best for you along the way. If you ever feel unsure, you can always reach out to the International Team, other students or the Students’ Union for advice.

We’re all here to help you get ready for this exciting move.
