Things to do in Worcester after an Open Day
So, you’ve just explored the University of Worcester campuses, taken in the facilities, chatted with staff and students, maybe even imagined yourself living here.
But now you’ve got some time to explore the city itself.
What next? Where do you start?
Well, you’re in luck because Worcester is full of charm, history, and hidden gems.
Whether you’re here for just a few hours or making a weekend of it, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant cathedral city (and yes, it’s famous for more than just the sauce!).
Discover Worcester’s rich history
One of the first stops for many visitors is Worcester Cathedral. Not only is it a stunning piece of architecture, but it also holds a special place in the hearts of University of Worcester students because our graduation ceremonies are held there! It’s a beautiful and reflective place to visit, even if you’re just passing through.
History lovers will enjoy The Commandery, Tudor House Museum, Greyfriars, The Guildhall and the Museum of Royal Worcester. The city is steeped in heritage, so if you’re curious about the past, you’ll have plenty to explore.
Enjoy the great outdoors
If you’re looking to unwind, Worcester has plenty of green spaces to enjoy. The River Severn Walk is a must-do, with great spots for food and drink along the way like Browns, The Diglis Hotel, and GoodRoots. If you walk the full stretch or head away from the Catherdral, you can also enjoy a walk through Worcester Racecourse, Gheluvelt park and stop for a bite to eat at Kyndfolk café.
Just a short walk from the city centre is Fort Royal Park, a lovely spot for a stroll, picnic, or just to take in the view. There’s also the canal route, perfect for walking or cycling, with more hidden foodie spots along the path.
Get involved in local culture
Worcester has a buzzing calendar of seasonal events and festivals, so it’s worth checking social media or the local events page to see what’s on. One standout is the Worcester Paint Festival, which brings the city’s walls to life with incredible street art. You can follow the official trail or just keep an eye out as you walk through the city.
Fun with friends
If you're after something a bit livelier, Worcester delivers. Try Dartside for interactive darts, Axe Junkies for axe throwing, Retroids for a nostalgic arcade, Mulligans for crazy golf, Escape Hunt for escape rooms or Arch Rivals, a quirky hangout with games and great drinks. These spots are perfect to get a vibrant feel of the city after open day.
Foodies, rejoice
Worcester is home to a fantastic mix of popular chain restaurants and cafés you'd expect to find in most cities, as well as a wide variety of unique independent spots that give the city its character. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick coffee, a light lunch, or a memorable evening meal, there’s something to suit every taste.
For a cosy café experience, local favourites like Papas, The Greek Café, Hash, GoodRoots, and Wayland’s Yard offer great food and welcoming vibes.
If you’re dining out, Hanbao and The Burger Shop are must-visits for incredible burgers and a cool atmosphere, while Chesters, Bodega’s, and Ruby’s bring something different to the table with their distinctive menus and independent flair.
The city also has a great selection of pubs and bars if you're after something more relaxed to round off your day.
A spot of shopping
Worcester offers a great mix of high-street favourites like H&M, Primark , and JD Sports, alongside independent clothing and gift shops. Whether you’re browsing or buying, it’s worth taking a wander through the main shopping streets.
So, what are you waiting for?
Worcester has so much to offer beyond the university walls. Whether you're into history, art, food, or just want to enjoy the outdoors, there’s something here for you.
