Balancing university with a part-time job
Are you considering getting a part-time job but worrying about missing out on university life or wondering how you will cope with workload and exams?
Here are my tips and tricks to help navigate university life while having a part time job.
Finding a part-time job
Finding a part time job can be tricky and finding a job which fits around studies can be even tricker, but ‘my careers’ on Blackboard is a great tool as you can find out about jobs, placements, internships and volunteering opportunities. There's also apps like Indeed where you can filter searches to match your needs for the job.
Make sure to factor in how far you’re willing to travel to work, as finding a part time job local to where you’re living will be your best friend. You need a job that’s easy for you get to, so you’re not worrying about travel or using too much of your time travelling to and from work.
Benefits of finding a part-time job
Having a part time job can help you manage any little extra expenses which may crop up, as well as helping you build your CV and gain work experience!
The most important thing is to not overload yourself and take care of yourself.
How many hours is suitable?
This will depend on your university workload. Think about how many days you are in university, or how many hours outside university your course requires you to work. On average I would recommend no more than 16 hours a week. This will ensure that you have days off to relax and recharge, which is very important for your mental and physical wellbeing.
Balancing the workload
Balancing the workload is something which will become easier overtime. The best way to do this is by finding out key dates, exam dates and course work deadlines. By doing this you can let your employer know that your availability may be limited around these times, this shows to the employer that you are not only conscientious but also shows commitment to your studies.
Balancing work with university life
We all know how busy university life can be, from the spontaneous trips out with friends, the never-ending conversations in the hallway and going out at weekends. But making set plans with friends around your work schedule will ensure that you still feel like you're making the most out of your university experience!
Setting out a study plan
Making a study plan will be your best friend! Setting a time aside to complete coursework or revision will not only help you when deadlines are fast approaching, but also help you understand how many hours you are able to work.
Tip- have a specific day to focus on a specific topic or subject. This will help you to not feel overwhelmed by the workload, as well as giving yourself little goals to complete.
