Worcester Dance Students Training on New State-of-the-Art Dance Floor
Wednesday, 01 October 2025
Dance students at the University of Worcester are now training on a brand-new state-of-the-art dance floor, enhancing their learning experience with professional-grade facilities.
The new floor surface was installed by Harlequin Floors, an industry leader in the design, manufacture and installation of specialist performance surfaces for dance and the performing arts.
The floor plays a vital role in helping dancers perform at their best by providing the right level of support and grip. The multi-purpose surface is suitable for theatre, drama, and many genres of dance, from percussive to hip-hop, jazz to street and contemporary.
Dr Paul Golz, Course Leader and Senior Lecturer for Dance and Performance said: “Our University is committed to providing an exceptional learning experience for all our dance students, and this new floor is a key part of that.”
He added: “It’s incredible to be teaching and performing on the same floor used for Strictly Come Dancing; it’s a ‘ten’ from everyone here!”
The Harlequin Liberty sprung floor absorbs shock and cushions landings. It’s topped with the Harlequin Standfast performance vinyl floor to create a combination giving dancers a slip resistant surface.
Harlequin’s Steve Green said: “The floor will play a vital role in helping dancers perform at their best by providing the right level of support and grip.”
He said: “Having already received excellent feedback from the teachers and students in the Department of Dance and Performance, we look forward to seeing the dancers thrive in their new environment.”
Chelsey Hart described the moment she first used it: “It made me feel more like a dancer,” she said. The second year Dance and Performance student added: “It makes you feel confident, and more like a professional.”
“It’s absolutely lovely,” said Kristianne Aune, also in the second year of her Dance and Performance degree. She continued: “In contemporary dance you spend a lot of time moving on the floor, so we need something which is soft to prevent injuries, and this new floor is so smooth.”
Maddison Powell has only just joined the University of Worcester and is in the first year of her Dance degree. She said: “Arts facilities can be ignored, but coming here and having this new sprung dance floor, it feels professional, and it means you can get in the zone.”
Maddison added: “When you’re jumping it can hurt your feet, but this absorbs the impact. You spend so much time on a dance floor you need it to be really good.”
