Professor David Green, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Worcester, takes his first steps today on the 175 mile walk from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in Spain to raise money for student scholarships and hardship funds.
A surge in pledges and donations has taken the total to over £52,000 made up of £35,000 already gifted, including gift aid, and a further £17,500 pledged when Professor Green completes this epic walk in 2 weeks’ time.
Professor Carla Martins, the President of the Compostela Group of Universities of which Worcester is the only UK member, met Professor Green on the steps of Porto cathedral to wish him the traditional ‘Buen Camino’.
Professor Martins said: “David’s journey to raise funds for student welfare and scholarships is an inspiration to us all. We are delighted that some of the monies raised will support a student scholarship for a Compostela group graduate to study at Worcester on its excellent postgraduate teacher training course.”
The Compostela Group, which includes Spain and Portugal’s leading Universities, was founded over 30 years ago. It now includes Universities from elsewhere in Europe and from Latin America. The Group promotes international cooperation and understanding as well as “helping to preserve the cultural and historical heritage that emerged along the ancient pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela.”
