Support and donations for the University of Worcester’s Vice Chancellor continue to pour in, as he reaches the halfway mark on his challenge to raise money for student scholarship and hardship funds.
Professor David Green CBE DL is walking 280km along the coastal path between Porto in Portugal and Santiago De Compostela in Spain, and has already raised more than £50,000 to support students experiencing tough financial situations.
A week into his 14-day challenge, staff, friends, and graduates of the University have been donating generously and offering encouraging messages of support to Professor Green as he continues on his journey.
The University of Worcester’s graduates top the table for sustained employment after leaving university. Many of the students come from challenging financial situations, and the money raised will help more of them to complete their course and go on to highly skilled roles in the workforce.
Jacqui Smith, the Minister for Skills who is responsible for universities is among the many people to wish him well online.
Baroness Smith, who studied for her Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Worcester, said: “Very best wishes for the walk, David, and a very worthy cause.”
She added: “May the sun shine on you, but not too strongly!”
Other people sending their messages of support on social media include Lord King, the former Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Nicholas Coleridge, Provost of Eton and former chair of the V&A Museum, Justine Greening, former Secretary of State for Education, and Lynn Denham, Leader of Worcester City Councillor who said Professor Green was “going above and beyond to support student welfare in Worcester.”
Strong civic support has also come from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, which helps provide many placements for students of the University.
