The University of Worcester is strengthening its ties with leading cultural organisations as plans for a multi-million-pound theatre redevelopment take shape.

Malvern Theatres is exploring opportunities to collaborate with the University, creating new prospects for students in the performing arts.

Work is already underway on a £20m transformation of Malvern Theatres which will improve accessibility and add workshops spaces, a 240-seat auditorium, and an outdoor amphitheatre.

“One of the things our new buildings are about are young people,” said Fred Moroni, CEO of Malvern Theatres. “We believe young people growing up in rural areas deserve the same opportunities as their city counterparts, and we believe we can provide that through partnerships with organisations like the University of Worcester.”

Speaking on a visit to the University, Mr Moroni added: “Everything I’ve seen today suggests that there are opportunities for partnerships between Malvern Theatres and the University of Worcester which will further the ambitions of young people who wish to build their careers in the performing arts sector.”

During his visit, Mr Moroni joined University leaders to look around the City and St John’s campuses, including a trip to the Art House on Castle Street.

“It’s fantastic,” he said. “I found the Art House particularly interesting. I’ve been in this area for thirty years now, and the changes the University has been through in that time have been extraordinary; I can’t think of anything else that has had such an impact on the city.”

He added: “I’ve seen work by the Drama and Dance departments, and the studio spaces they have here. These are all areas where our two organisations can form partnerships which will help young people who are studying and who want to make the arts part of their professional lives.”
