A new postgraduate degree to support those entering the private tutoring industry has been launched by the University of Worcester in partnership with Qualified Tutor, a leading professional organisation specialising in tutor education.
The Professional Tutoring PGCert course – the first of its kind in the UK – will offer structured training for those seeking to become a tutor, as well as those already in practice.
Private tutoring has boomed in the UK since the Covid-19 pandemic, with parents seeking additional support for their children’s learning.
Andy Hale, Principal Lecturer and Tutoring Lead at the University of Worcester said: “This course is aimed at people wherever they are in their tutoring journey. Whether they’re making the transition from teacher to tutor, or if they’re looking for a formal qualification to back up years of professional experience.”
He continued: “In the first half of the course, students will learn about areas like teaching methods, following curriculum, lesson delivery, and safeguarding.”
Andy said: “In the second half the course focusses on implementation, where students get to work with students to put their learning into action and build their confidence and skills as professional tutors.”
The qualification, open to people who already have a degree in any subject, will be delivered online and is open to anyone in the UK.
Julia Silver, co-Founder of Qualified Tutor, and author of Love Tutoring: Be the Tutor Your Student Needs, said: “This new degree is really exciting. As well as educating tutors in how to teach – and how to teach different kinds of young people, many of whom have differing needs, students will be supported in how to create a business plan and how to operate as a sole trader.”
She added: “Tutoring is a wonderful, flexible job, but it can be isolating, so we also want to create a network where tutors can share ideas, keep up-to-date with the latest pedagogy and can really thrive.”
