The University won the EDI award at the 2026 Better Society Awards, which celebrate organisations helping to create a more equal, ethical and sustainable society.

Naifa Juma, the newly elected President of Worcester Students’ Union, said the award reflected the work that has taken place across the University to make students feel valued and included.

“Getting this award shows the work that has been put in, the discussions that have taken place, and the action that has been made throughout the year,” she said.

“You can see that the University has made a courageous effort in terms of making our students feel more included,” she added.

Naifa was elected by her fellow students alongside Clara Day, Vice President Education, and Lois Stevens, Vice President Student Activities.

She said representing students was both a privilege and a responsibility.

“It was an absolute honour to be elected by my fellow students,” she said. “It’s really great to know that I’ve got their confidence as I work towards inclusion, student welfare, building networks and ensuring the students’ voice is represented.”

During her year in office, Naifa said she hopes to focus on improving support for commuting students, helping students facing cost-of-living challenges, strengthening peer support networks and supporting students who are in the first in their family to attend university.

Clara Day said the award highlighted the importance of embedding equality, diversity and inclusion throughout university life.

“EDI is incredibly important,” said Clara, who received an award recognising her commitment to inclusion during this year’s Students’ Union elections. “Students and staff need to see EDI be consistently integrated into the community and culture here at the university."
