Derek qualified as a Registered Children’s Nurse from Staffordshire University in 2019. Following qualification, he joined Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he has worked in a variety of roles, including Paediatric Intensive Care and the Paediatric Assessment Unit. Prior to qualifying as a nurse, Derek held several clinical and non-clinical roles within the NHS, beginning in 2007.
Derek is passionate about the education of healthcare students and has extensive experience supporting learners from a range of professions. In previous roles, he has worked alongside paramedic, physiotherapy, and radiography academics to support students through simulation-based education. He also has a strong interest in pre-hospital care and volunteers with West Midlands Ambulance Service in his spare time.
In addition, Derek has a keen interest in Technology Enhanced Learning. He is nearing completion of his Master’s degree, which focuses on student preparation for clinical placement through the use of 360° immersive learning platforms.
