Mini-Mortarboards at the Ready for the Children’s University Graduation Ceremony

UW Childrens Graduation

Parents and staff of pupils from Perry Wood Primary School cheered as 94 young students were recognised with certificates, with many proudly taking to the stage on the day.

It took place at the University of Worcester, which works in conjunction with a nationwide initiative to raise aspirations and confidence in children, while encouraging participation in extra-curricular activities in and out of the classroom.

The Children’s University initiative is designed to introduce children to university and demonstrate how accessible higher education is while encouraging personal achievements in and out of the classroom.

It allows children to participate in activities which can include football, drama, and gymnastics, and the Summer Reading Challenge at local libraries.

One pupil said: “I loved throwing the cap at the end and it inspired me to want to graduate when I’m older”

Another added: “Going up and getting my certificate helped me to face my fear of large audiences.”

Another classmate said the experience made them think about their future: “I enjoyed visiting a university and seeing what happens there, it has made me think about whether I want to go to one when I’m older.”

Annabel Collins, Operations Coordinator, University of Worcester, is one of the organisers. She said: “It was lovely to welcome Perry Wood Primary School onto campus and to celebrate the children’s achievements over the last year.”

She continued: “This was the school’s third year graduating with us here at the University of Worcester, and we’re so proud of all of the children and their dedication to learning outside the classroom to gain their awards and certificates.”

Annabel added: “Early aspirations influence subject choices, study habits, and engagement in school. If children understand how education connects to their interests and goals, they’re more likely to stay motivated and make decisions which keep those pathways open.”

The University of Worcester is now hoping to hear from more schools locally who’d like to take part. To find out more, please email cu@worc.ac.uk
