A leading educator whose innovative work has helped improve digital accessibility and inclusion has been named the winner of the Worcester Spirit Award at the University's inaugural Alumni Awards.

Helen Wilson, who completed an MA in Education at the University between 2008 and 2010 and is now studying for a PhD part-time, was recognised for her outstanding commitment to education, accessibility and public service.

Since graduating with a distinction in her MA Education, Helen has built an impressive career in education and accessibility. She qualified as a teacher and went on to receive a Pearson Teaching Award for her work as a Further Education lecturer in Art and Design.

Helen later developed the nationally recognised SCULPT model, which helps people understand the fundamental principles of digital accessibility. Created for Worcestershire County Council, the model gained national recognition and was shortlisted for four national awards between 2021 and 2022, with two resulting in Highly Commended honours.

Her expertise and leadership in the field led to her appointment as Digital Accessibility Lead for Worcestershire County Council, where she continues to champion inclusive approaches to digital services and communication.

Reflecting on the role the University played in her journey, Helen highlighted the support she received during her studies.

She said: “I loved being in the classroom and making connections with other students. My supervisor was also very constructive and supportive, making my learning journey more enjoyable and fulfilling.”

The Worcester Spirit Award celebrates graduates and members of the University community who embody the values of the University through their work, leadership and service to others.

On receiving the award, Helen said: “I am very honoured, but I owe a lot to those who supported and championed my SCULPT ideas.”

As both an alumna and current PhD student, Helen continues to make a positive impact locally and nationally, helping to create more accessible opportunities for people through education and digital innovation.

The inaugural University of Worcester Alumni Awards celebrate the achievements of graduates who are making a positive difference in their professions and communities.
