Jo gained her MA in Applied Linguistics (TEFL) in 2003, specialising in first- and second-language acquisition, with specific focus on the Effect of Formal Instruction on Classroom Teaching. She also has a 1st class BA (Hons) degree in Modern Foreign Languages (French and Italian) and TEFL, together with the Trinity TESOL Certificate and a Cert. Ed. in Further and Adult Education. She was approved as Assistant CELTA Tutor by Cambridge English in February 2015.

Teaching & Research

Jo teaches English as a Foreign Language (EFL), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), TEFL and French/Italian in the Language Centre at the University of Worcester. She is also one of the tutors responsible for teaching the mandatory first-year module Describing English on the University BA English Language Studies course and is module leader for the third-year Introduction to Language Acquisition module, which introduces students to the key concepts of both First and Second Language Acquisition. She is an approved Assistant CELTA Tutor and teaches on the full-time training courses which are run by the Language Centre.

Before moving to Worcester, Jo worked as a tutor/lecturer in EFL/EAP and Italian at the University of Bedfordshire, where she also conducted workshops and supervised teaching practice on the University TEFL course. Prior to working in EFL she taught French and Italian in Further and Adult Education, in addition to running the Italian teaching programme at Aylesbury High School (which included conducting the Italian GCSE oral exams) and working as a specialist language tutor and freelance translator/interpreter for a number of commercial organisations.
