I trained as a Physiotherapist at the University of Bradford, graduating in 1996. I went on to work in the NHS for over 10 years, rising to a position as an Extended Scope Practitioner (Trauma & Orthopaedics) at the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. I moved into academia as a Clinical Tutor at the University of Birmingham in 2007. In this role I was involved in the delivery of under- and post-graduate education within the department of nursing and physiotherapy, specialising in anatomy & physiology and musculoskeletal practice. I completed an MSc in Advancing Practice (Specialist Manipulative Physiotherapy) in 2009. In 2011, I successfully applied for a fully funded NIHR doctoral fellowship, completing the PhD alongside my physiotherapy teaching workload and graduating in 2015.

Qualifications:

2019 PGCert Academic Practice, University of Birmingham, UK
2015 PhD, University of Birmingham, UK
2009 MSc, University of Birmingham, UK
1996 BSc (Hons), Physiotherapy, University of Bradford, UK

Teaching Interests

I have a Higher Education Academy Fellowship and have been involved in research-informed learning & teaching activity across a number of under- and post-graduate health-focused programmes, including: physiotherapy [BSc(Hons); MSc (pre-registration); MSc (Advancing Practice)], Medicine [Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) Population Sciences and Humanities], Public Health [MPH] and Clinical Trials [MSc]. I employ a variety of learning and teaching methods (e.g. Inquiry-based learning, Kinesthetic Learning, Flipped Classrooms etc), including digital methods to support blended learning, and completed a PgCert in Academic Practice at the University of Birmingham in 2019.

Research Interests

My primary research interests centres around health outcomes. In particular, the best-practice use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) across a range of conditions and clinical areas including chronic kidney disease, cancer and musculoskeletal care.

I have published 56 papers in peer-reviewed journals including: Physiotherapy (Impact Factor 3.010); Manual Therapy (Impact Factor 2.158); the BMJ (Impact Factor 30.223), Journal of the American Medical association (Impact Factor 45.540), PLOS Medicine (Impact Factor 10.500), Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Impact Factor 12.589) and the Lancet (Impact Factor 60.392) and have a H-index of 20 (i10-index 33) and a current total grant income >£3 million. My work has informed the recent European Medicines Agencies guidelines on the evaluation of anticancer medicinal products in man and is REF returnable.

I am an active member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL) and Centre for Patient-Reported Outcomes Research (CPROR) at the University of Birmingham. I also chair the UK National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Living with and Beyond Cancer Methodology Workstream.
