I’ve spent more than 28 years working at the University of Worcester, and my career has evolved alongside some pretty remarkable changes in technology. Born in 1978, I grew up during the technology boom and started my career with an HND in Computing, learning programming languages including 6502 Assembly, COBOL and C++.

Since then, I’ve continued to learn new technologies throughout my career, including PHP, Perl and MySQL.My career at the University has taken me through computer support, networking and telecommunications before eventually moving into technical support for the Digital Arts Centre.

Today, I work across a wide range of digital technologies and act as an integration specialist, helping to ensure that our technical resources, systems and equipment work effectively together. My role covers everything from film production and photography through to television, recording, podcasting and live production. I also manage our TV, recording and podcast studios and take a particular interest in keeping our facilities and teaching equipment aligned with current industry practice.

That includes working with modern film-production technologies such as mirrorless cinema cameras, including the Sony FX3, professional gimbal systems and the wider ecosystem of lenses, batteries, accessories and production equipment that supports them. Despite the breadth of the role, around 80% of my day-to-day work still involves working directly with students.

I provide first-line technical support, run Technical Tutorials on advanced equipment and help students get the most from the technology available to them. I also have an open-door approach - if you have a problem, an idea, or simply want to talk through something, you’re welcome to drop in and have a chat.

I’ve continued my own academic development alongside my professional career. I completed a BA (Hons) in Creative Digital Media, specialising in photography, followed by a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

I’m also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Outside the University, my interests have often developed in much the same way as my career: something starts as a hobby, I become fascinated by it, and before long I’m finding ways to develop it further!

More than 30 years ago, I started experimenting with sound and PA systems. That hobby has grown into a second professional career, and I’m now a sound designer and operator for a local theatre, providing technical expertise across more than 12 productions each year.

Working in theatre has given me a completely different perspective on technology, creativity, teamwork and problem-solving. I also have a passion for aviation. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to fly a range of aircraft, including vintage biplanes and gliders.

There’s something particularly enjoyable about combining technology with the freedom of flying - and I have no fear of being upside down!

Today, alongside my University role, I work freelance as a photographer, drone pilot, streaming producer and sound engineer. I’ve always been interested in what technology can make possible rather than simply the technology itself.

For me, the most exciting part is seeing students take the equipment, experiment with it and use it to create something of their own. Technology is constantly changing, so I think the most important thing is to keep learning, keep experimenting and never be afraid to try something new.
