Sophie is full-time PhD student in the School of Science and the Environment at the University of Worcester.
Sophie’s main research interests are using remote monitoring methods such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s/drones), for environmental monitoring applications. Her PhD research focuses on evaluating the use of UAVs for monitoring river flows, using the technique known as ‘image velocimetry’. She is focussing on assessing several different image velocimetry algorithms, namely, Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry, Space Time Image Velocimetry, Particle Tracking Velocimetry and Kanade-Lucas Tomasi Image Velocimetry. She is conducting several field campaigns at a range of river flows, to assess the sensitivity of various algorithms that are applied to video imagery to calculate the surface flow velocity of rivers.
Sophie is a member of the River Science Research Group, the European COST Action Harmonious and the IAHS Working Group MOXXI (Measurements and Observations in the 21st Century).
Her supervisors are Professor Ian Maddock, Dr Mark Corbett, and Nick Everard.
