Our senior engagement programme

The Senior Physical Activity & Adapted Sport (SPAAS) programme provides a mixture of exercise, sport and physical activity sessions. Offered on a weekly basis to those aged over 60 living in Worcester and the surrounding areas.

Run by the University of Worcester and led by qualified and experienced instructors, the SPAAS programme provides a community service inviting all those over 60 years old to the University to participate in a range of sessions.

The Senior Games

Now approaching its 5th year, the Senior Games provides the opportunity for those aged 60yrs and over to take part in a competitive sporting tournament, competing against individuals of similar ages from around the county of Worcestershire and beyond.

With three days of competition in sports such as badminton, walking football, walking netball and outdoor adventurous activities the Senior Games embraces the philosophy of being active at any age regardless of gender, ability or age whilst encouraging high levels of competition and highlighting the importance of sportsmanship at all ages.

The Senior Games 2020 is set to be another fantastic tournament. With new events planned at our Lakeside Campus, this is set to be the biggest Games to date.

The 2020 Games will take place on 19, 20 and 21 May. The full schedule will be released over the coming weeks, however keep the dates free and get practicing.  

Physical Activity and You

Disease prevention

Maintaining regular physical activity can help prevent many common diseases, such as heart diseasediabetes and some cancers. Physical activity also improves the overall immune system, which is important for seniors as their immune systems can become compromised as they age.

Improved mental health

The positive effects of physical activity on mental health are almost endless. The endorphins (hormones which make you feel good) released during physical activity act as a stress reliever, leaving you feeling happier and more satisfied. Increased levels of physical activity have also been linked to improved sleep patterns, especially during senior years. 

Decreased risk of falls

Statistically, increased chronological age results in a higher risk of falls. Falls can be disastrous for maintaining independence during older age. Physical activity has been proven to improve flexibility, strength, coordination and balance, all of which reduce the risk of falls. As age increases, so does the recovery time from falls meaning anything that helps avoid them should be viewed as very important. 

Social health

Increased age often parallels changes in social activity and social circles. Participation in any session, whether it walking, fitness or sport can develop into a fun social event. Keeping, or redeveloping strong social ties is very important as adult’s age as it provides a sense of identity and purpose, helping avoid feelings of depressions and or loneliness. 

Improved cognitive function

Improved cognitive function, gained through regular physical activity, is linked to a lower risks of dementia and other cognitive declines.
