PE practitioners with expertise in dance are increasingly rare, however dance remains a key element of the national curriculum. 

This unique degree offers students the chance to study Physical Education whilst maintaining a strong emphasis on dance. It is designed for those who would view dance as their primary sport.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS formerly known as CRB) may be required for some modules.

Dance experience is essential for this course though contemporary training is not a requirement for this course. We do not require a formal qualification in dance though as a rough guide you should be around Level 5 (Intermediate) or equivalent in any style of dance or be doing a BTEC/A Level or equivalent in dance.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for audition and interview.

Teaching and assessment

How will you be taught?

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.

A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.

Teaching

You are taught through a combination of: 

  • Practical classes (for example technique, dance making)
  • Seminars and lectures (for example dance science, research)
  • Online learning (for example VLE, OneNote, Twitter, Pinterest)
  • Authentic learning experiences (work placement, teaching opportunities)

Seminars enable the discussion and development of understanding of topics covered in lectures whereas authentic learning experiences allow you to apply your learning to real-life scenarios. You have an opportunity to undertake a semester long placement in the second year of the course, supervised for agreed projects by a work-based mentor and a University tutor. However, there are many additional opportunities for learning in an applied context.

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least four occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course.

You will complete a degree that is highly relevant for a physical education expert in dance. You will have the opportunity to choose from a range of PE or dance modules allowing you to customise this degree to your exact needs. We will provide our support, our understanding and our experience. In return we want active, engaged students who want to experiment, challenge and who will never settle for ordinary.

There will be an opportunity for performance throughout the academic year and during the summer.

Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 12 - 16 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

  • 4 hours of technique
  • 4 - 8 hours of practical activities such as dance making or practical application of learning
  • 2 hours of interactive workshops
  • 4 - 6 hours of seminars or lectures

In year three there is slightly less seminars and workshops to allow for independent study and placement activities.

Assessment

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or 'formative' assignments. Each module has one or more formal or 'summative' assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

Feedback

You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

We aim to provide you with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.

Meet the team

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes a mix of academics and professional practitioners with industry experience. We also sometimes bring in visiting lecturers with expertise in specific areas.

Teaching is informed by research and the majority of permanent course lecturers have a higher education teaching qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Paul Golz

Paul is an experienced teacher, choreographer, dancer and researcher. Following his initial training at the Centre for Professional Dance Training in Edinburgh he trained as a Graham dancer, however it is somatic based technique that remains his true passion, especially in contact improvisation and creative partner work.

Paul has worked professionally with Misfitted Dance and Birmingham Opera. In 2011, he set up his own company, Ephemeris Dance following his interest in Dance and Digital. He has choreographed work in this arena under Arts Council grants for both his own company and ReadySaltedCode.

Rebecca Foster MBE

Rebecca Foster MBE has been teaching PE predominantly in the North of England for over 20 years. Rebecca was Head of PE of one of the first six Sports Colleges in the country. After 7 years of teaching she backpacked the World and did some temporary teaching in Australia and South Africa. After her year out Rebecca continued to teach in Yorkshire, managing one of the largest Sports Partnerships in the country. Rebecca then went on to become a Teacher Fellow at Leeds Beckett University, where she taught Initial Teacher Training programmes for Secondary and Primary trainees.

Rebecca competed for our country in the Heptathlon (when she was much younger!) and holds a Level 2 multi-event license. She volunteered for UK Deaf Athletics for 12 years, being Team Manager and travelling coach at three Deaflympics.  She currently is a trustee for Deaf Direct based in Worcester and is a support worker for a few hours a month to vulnerable young people.

As a further accolade, Rebecca has been awarded an MBE in recognition for her services to inclusive sport and supporting young people to achieve their potential.

Helen Hope

Helen Hope is a Principal Lecturer in Physical Education. Before joining the University in 2005 she had taught in secondary schools for ten years and was Head of a PE department for five years. She has previously led the PGCE PE teacher training programme for three years before moving into teaching on the Undergraduate Modular Scheme (UMS) course. She became Head of Department for Sport, Management and Outdoor Education in September 2015 and leads on Student Retention for the School. Helen prides herself in demonstrating excellence in teaching and learning and has won and been nominated for various Student Choice Awards. Helen has a keen interest in transformational learning, blended teaching approaches and the use of authentic assessments, ensuring that students are able to apply their learning in real-life situations. As Retention lead she has developed new processes and systems to ensure that students are supported in their personal learning journeys.

Charlotte Beaman-Evans

Charlotte is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and the Sports Scholarship Coordinator at the University of Worcester. Before joining the University, she was previously a teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school.

Charlotte is now embarking upon a career in Higher Education having completed her MSc in Sports Coaching Science and Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.

A keen sports player Charlotte has played a range of sports including rugby, football and hockey, achieving international status in rugby.

Dr Rachael Bullingham

Rachael is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Course Leader of the Physical Education and Outdoor Education BSc at the University of Worcester.  Rachael’s PhD analysed the experiences of openly lesbian athletes participating in team sports, this led to the publication of Out in Sport which offers an up-to-date examination of homophobia in sport.

Vanessa Jones

Vanessa Jones is the Director of Academic Partnerships for the School of Sport and Exercise Science (SSES). She has a portfolio of roles which includes the remit for the strategic development and management of academic partnerships with a range of institutions for collaborative programmes. She also manages the Associate Lecturer (Hourly Paid Lecturers) provision and the Staff Spiral Induction Programme. Additionally, she is strategic lead for the Women in Sport and Exercise (WISE) and Off-Court Manager for Severn Stars Superleague Netball team, which is a franchised partnership between University of Worcester and the University of Gloucestershire. She is also part of the PE teaching team in SSES. She studied for her first degree, a BEd (Hons) Human Movement at St Mary's University College, Twickenham and her MSc in Sport and Exercise Science at University Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC).

Vanessa's first PE teaching post was in Telford, Shropshire which was followed by a two year break from teaching, working in the leisure industry. She returned to teaching taking up a post in Pembrokeshire where she became Head of PE in a large comprehensive school and the Associate Adviser for Secondary PE for the county. Alongside her teaching role Vanessa also worked for ESTYN/OFSTED as a subject inspector for Physical Education and continues this work within her current role. She was also the county and regional hockey coach for under 16 and under 18 schoolgirls and was a member of the Welsh Hockey Coaching Committee. She herself played hockey at regional and national league level.

Vanessa is currently Project Lead for an ERASMUS+ collaborative research project which involves 6 other European Partners in developing a Gender Equity Toolkit for Generation Z. This will be delivered as an online platform (MOOC).

lerverne-barber

Lerverne Barber

Lerverne is Deputy Head and Principal Lecturer with responsibility for Learning, Teaching and Student Experience (including Recruitment, Retention and Achievement), within the School of Sport and Exercise Science (SSES).

She is a member of the Senior Management Team in SSES and has been part of the Physical Education (PE) teaching team for more than ten years, having been PE Course Leader from 2008 - 2011. Lerverne has a wealth of experience in her subject area, having been a Secondary PE teacher, PE adviser and OfSTED Inspector. She has also worked as an Independent PE Consultant leading projects and delivering training for organisations such as the Youth Sport Trust, the Qualification and Curriculum Authority and the Department for Education.

Lerverne has played a key role in developing the School's international profile in countries such as China and Japan, for work in inclusive sport and Physical Education. In 2011 she became a University of Worcester Teaching Fellow for excellence in learning and teaching and in 2015 she achieved the award of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy for her leadership of learning and teaching (SFHEA), followed by the award of National Teaching Fellow (NTF) in 2017.

How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

Additional costs

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying. The amounts vary between courses.

As part of this course we will arrange for you to attend professional dance productions. There is a cost associated with performances.

There may also be costs associated with costumes for any performances you may be involved in.
