Dr Mathieu Di Miceli is a lecturer in Biomedical Science. Mathieu joined the University of Worcester in 2021 for his expertise in neuroscience. He is an expert in electrophysiology, the study of electrical activities in cells. As a member of the Worcester Biomedical Research Group, he is currently investigating the pathological alterations that can lead to neurophysiological dysfunctions in the brain, using in silico models. These include protein-ligand interactions, neural circuits and large-scale datasets. Mathieu is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and his teaching is focused on anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, epidemiology and bioinformatics.

Research Interests

Mathieu started his career in neurophysiology in 2012, In the team of Dr Mireille Natoli-Lerner. The focus was on epileptiform activity in an in vitro model of epilepsy, using patch-clamp field electrophysiology. This research aimed at understanding how dysfunctions the blood brain barrier could lead to epilepsy.

Mathieu pursued his career studying myocardial infraction in acutely dissociated cardiac myocytes from rats, in the team of Dr Alain Lacampagne. This project aimed at understanding if the antioxidant molecule N Acetyl Cystein could improve the excitability and/or the contractibility of cardiomyocytes, using field electrophysiology.

In 2012, Mathieu joined De Montfort University, in Dr Gronier’s team, where his PhD project focused on the possible long-term consequences of psychostimulant intake. More precisely, the study was about the relationship between methylphenidate exposure and neurochemical alterations in brain regions controlling motivation and cognition, using in vivo single-cell extracellular electrophysiology.

Mathieu's post-doctoral studies, in Dr Sophie Layé’s team, focused on the relationship between dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids, endocannabinoid receptors and synaptic plasticity, using ex vivo patch clamp electrophysiology.

Mathieu's research interests include basal ganglia neurophysiology, neuronal circuitry and in silico models. Besides, Mathieu is also fascinated about big data analysis, using bioinformatics.

Mathieu also has keen interests in astrophysics and generative art.
