University Scholarship Guides Student Stateside

Rebecca Abrams, from Royston in Hertfordshire, has been awarded a £300 scholarship from the University to help fund her trip to the USA.

The 20-year-old will jet off to New Jersey at the end of July. The trip is as part of a Girlguiding camp in association with the American Girl Scouts. Guides from Hertfordshire, Staffordshire and Northamptonshire will be attending.

"I have been a member of Girlguiding since I was six years old, when I started as a Rainbow, and then went on to be a Brownie, Guide, Ranger and have been a leader in Girlguiding for the last two years," she said. "I have had lots of experiences through Girlguiding, like meeting the Queen, when I helped at one of her garden parties, as well as sleeping at the National Science Museum in London and enjoying a trip on HMS Belfast in London."

During the trip, Rebecca will have the chance to try new activities, including archery and some traditional American games like pie eating competitions. After the camp, Rebecca, and the other women will each be staying with an American Girl Scout and their family in order to experience American lifestyle and culture. And no trip to New Jersey would be complete without experiencing New York; the women will be spending two days there.

Rebecca's trip to America and her time Girlguiding have helped to shape her aims for the future. She now has ambitions to work in heritage or archaeology with the hope that in her career she can make these areas more accessible to children and young people.
