University of the Year finalist
Recognised for our graduate success, we’re shortlisted for University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards 2025.
Overview
Discover how films, TV shows and digital media are created, and learn how screenplays become the stories we see on screen. You’ll study real scripts from top films and TV episodes and see how writing, directing and production techniques work together to create meaning and impact.
Media and Film is both an art form and a powerful tool for education, influence and global communication. You’ll explore how media has changed over time, and how writers use character, dialogue, camera angles, framing, lighting and sound to express mood, message and theme.
You’ll investigate major film and media genres and movements, from sci-fi, crime and horror to romance, manga and kawaii culture. By studying global screen cultures, you’ll understand how media reflects the society it was made in, and how it shapes the way people think, act and connect with the world.
Explore key theories, ideas and creative processes used across film, TV, radio and online platforms. To understand how to get your screenplays made, you’ll study pitches, loglines and treatments used in the industry and learn how to pitch your own ideas with confidence. You can even take part in a writers’ room, working with other students to develop ideas just like the teams behind long-running TV dramas and soaps. Through Media & Film you’ll be able to combine this knowledge with learning how production, distribution and digital marketing adapt to modern audiences and new technologies.
You’ll be introduced to leading professionals from the media, creative and tech industries, and have your scripts reviewed by working script editors and writers. These opportunities will give you insight into careers in screenwriting, content creation, digital marketing, events and culture, whilst building your employability and network of professional contacts.
Course content
Throughout the course you’ll be an active researcher as you find case studies relevant to your interests and specialisms, to critically analyse and inspire your own creative work. You’ll have opportunities to try out different script formats and genres as you write for film, TV and radio, and develop your own media projects to expand your portfolio.
We regularly review our courses to reflect the latest research and developments in the subject area, as well as feedback from students, employers and the wider sector. As a result, modules may change to ensure the course remains current and relevant.
Optional modules will run if enough students choose to study them. It is not guaranteed that all modules will be offered every year.
Careers
This course is developed to provide you with a range of transferable skills, giving you the flexibility to progress into a career within the media industry or elsewhere. You’ll complete the course with critical and creative thinking skills alongside highly developed writing and communication skills.
Through opportunities to meet and work with industry professionals, participate in competitions and having your screenplays reviewed by industry experts, you’ll also gain confidence in showcasing your work and networking with professionals who can offer advice and industry insight after you graduate.
