Counselling Psychology BSc Hons

Counselling Psychology is an amalgation of psychological theory, research and therapeutic practice with an emphasis on personal development.

This course will provide you with an understanding of all core areas of psychology with an added emphasis on ways in which psychological theories of personality and relationship formation contribute to the understanding of mental health and the practive of counselling psychology.

In addition to the core areas of psychology required for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society, all three years offer distinct Counselling Psychology modules. Year 1 provides an overview of the theoretical and philosophical foundations of Counselling Psychology. Year 2 focuses on theories of relationship formation alongside interpersonal communication processes. Year 3 offers an overview of the professional and ethical issues involved in the practice of Counselling Psychology and a dedicated independent study assignment with a focus on Counselling Psychology.

This course will allow you to study a fascinating range of modules which link the stimulating and complementary disciplines of counselling and psychology. The programme of study provides an opportunity to gain Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society for students who successfully complete all aspects of the course – a crucial factor for a career in Psychology.

The course provides you with the foundations for pursuing a career in Applied Psychology (for example, Counselling Psychology and Clinical Psychology) and related disciplines.

This is an ideal course for students who have experience of working in a support and/or care environment, who wish to explore the theoretical aspects of this area more thoroughly. Alongside our tutors, who have experience in a range of areas such as Chartered Counselling and Health & Occupational Psychology, there are first class facilities including a number of specialised laboratories and a host of testing equipment.

Employability

This course will provide you with the foundations to pursue further professional training towards becoming a Chartered Counselling or Clinical Psychologist. Other possible psychology-related postgraduate professional training programmes might include those leading to psychology careers in education, health, academia, sport and forensics.

The acquisition of psychological theory and knowledge alongside the communication skills gained would place graduates at a distinct advantage in a variety of professions, particularly in health-related disciplines.

A degree in Psychology is highly favoured by employers, giving you an excellent advantage in the job market. During your studies with us you will learn new skills, develop existing expertise, study a wide range of approaches and metodologies and leave with a broader range of knowledge, skills and abilities. An important part of this learning process is the ability to reflect upon your own experiences; an aspect of practice engaged in by all professional psychologists. We will help you to develop these skills through the Academic Tutoring system; you will be provided with an Understanding Skill & Professionalism booklet, which you will use both as a record of your learning and a tool for self-reflection.
