Stand by Me Training Resource

An understanding of how to support people with dementia by developing good communication and person-centred care in their own practice, within teams and within organisations.

Overview

The course incorporates six video dramatisations across different settings including following Maggie and Mick as Maggie receives a diagnosis of dementia, gets help at home, and moves into a residential care home; and following Marty and Mary and his family as he needs emergency medical care, a stay on an acute hospital ward and as he nears the end of his life. The Stand by Me course is divided into 10 interactive modules, with the 10th module being the assessment. Original Handbook and DVD (now upgraded to a free e-learning course - see details above)

Stand by Me was originally created as a DVD training resource to help healthcare staff communicate better with people living with dementia. This is still available and is a useful resource if you want to use it as part of facilitated training. The handbook contains questions that can be used as discussion points after you have watched sections of the DVD clips.

What is the difference between the online course and the handbook?

The online version contains a small amount of additional material which was not available when the original handbook was produced. The online version has been created with a view to a single user working through the content, it can also be used as a tool for facilitated training.

How can I get a copy?

You can purchase a copy of the original handbook/DVD online using the secure link at https://ext-webapp-01.worc.ac.uk/cgi-bin/dementia/dementia.pl
