Dr Matthew Cook

Dr Matthew Cook joined the University of Worcester in January 2017 as a lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science. Before joining the University, Matthew was a PhD student at the University of Chichester. His thesis examined the effect of New Zealand blackcurrant on physiological responses at rest and during exercise in trained cyclists.

Matthew is an accredited sport and exercise scientist by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and has worked with a range of athletes including cyclists and runners. One of his highlights in applied support work was assisting athletes competing in the 2014 and 2015 Marathon des Sables by undertaking acclimation before the event.

Matthew is currently teaching the following modules:

Research:

Matthew’s research interests are in Sports Nutrition, Exercise and Health. He has an interest into the effects and application of “functional foods” in Sport and Exercise Science in addition to the health benefits from consuming these foods. Recent studies have examined physiological responses following intake of New Zealand blackcurrant and Matcha green tea. Matthew’s research has been the first to observe the effects of New Zealand blackcurrant during exercise with focus on cardiovascular, physiological, metabolic and performance responses.
