Teaching and Assessment
How will you be taught?
You will learn how to:
Explore the real-life application of learning via tutors with business experience, via work placement, and via contact with local, national and international businesses – in the past these have included Shell, Barclays Bank and the BBC.
There will be opportunities to take part in projects for clients, visits to businesses, live and computerised simulations, case studies and exhibitions alongside the usual lectures, workshops and seminars. You will develop a range of skills, which you can evidence on your CV and talk about at job interviews
Worcester is a place where you will be supported to reach your full potential as a self-directed learner ready to make an immediate impact in the world of work. Tutors are friendly, approachable and accessible and virtual resources enable you to work flexibly to suit your own learning preferences and busy lifestyle.
You will progressively build your knowledge and expertise across levels of study through modules which are delivered in different ways, perhaps through traditional lectures and seminars as well as e-lectures, workshops and simulations. In a typical week, you will have 12 hours of scheduled contact time, which you will supplement with one-to-one tutorial meetings and around 20 hours of guided independent study.
There are a variety of assessment types – reports, presentations, projects, examinations – and sometimes you will even be able to choose an assessment style to suit you.
As part of the Marketing; Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations; or Business, Advertising and Marketing degree the CIM will award a full exemption against one of the three modules that are required for the completion of the CIM Diploma in Professional Marketing.
To successfully complete the remaining two modules for the Diploma students need to pay a small additional fee to become student members of the CIM and an assessment fee and submit revised assessments drawn from relevant modules (depending on your modules selected) from within your Degree to be awarded a professional qualification and start your journey of full membership and lifelong learning with the CIM.
Meet the team
Here are a few of the current members of the department who teach on this course:
Dr Paulo Mora-Avila
Paulo has an extensive international experience in the fields of Marketing, Advertising and PR, performing roles both in academic and practical levels.
He holds an MBA from Royal Holloway University of London and a PhD in Marketing, Social Media and Consumer Behaviour with a focus on branding from the University of Birmingham.
Paulo’s teaching experience include Lecturer in Marketing at Birkbeck University of London, Lecturer in Marketing Strategy at Hult Business school and Assistant to Lecturers in Marketing Management at Birmingham University. His teaching and research areas of interest include, consumer behaviour, brands, social media, digital marketing, corporate reputation, and cross-cultural and cross-generational marketing.
Currently Tao teaches International Business Strategy module (MSc) ,Global Business Strategy module (Level 6) and Marketing and Management module (Level 4) at Worcester Business School, University of Worcester. In addition, he is deputy programme leader for Postgraduate programmes (MSc, Exec MBA, MA). He is also the China recruitment lead responsible for recruitment of overseas students in the Business School.
Prior to his academic career, he worked as a market researcher promoting public services on behalf of local councils in Greater Manchester area; projects included waste minimisation, regeneration and housing transfer. Tao enjoys exploring the world and tries to understand people from different cultural backgrounds. His favourite quotation is “Those who do nothing make no mistakes”!
Dr Richard Nicholls
Richard’s main teaching and research interests focus on the management and marketing of services. His specialist areas include interaction between service customers; providing services for older consumers; and customer misbehaviour.
Richard has extensive international experience and has taught at a number of European universities, including the European Business School in Frankfurt, Poznan University of Economics and Warsaw University.
Dr Jenny Ma (Wei-chen Ma)
Before joining to Worcester, Jenny worked in the field of marketing communication, including project marketing and copywriting with several prestige media and advertising firms in Taiwan.
During her years in Durham University, Jenny obtained experiences in teaching modules such as Research Methods and Consumer Psychology in both PG and UG levels.
Dr Marwa Gad Mohsen
Marwa is an experienced marketing practitioner and academic. She worked in Egyptian-EU funded programmes to upgrade Egyptian SMEs, before embarking on an academic and research career. She holds an MBA from the American University in Cairo and a PhD in Marketing from Warwick Business School.
Marwa previously worked as a Senior Lecturer in Marketing Research/Marketing at London Metropolitan University, where she also co-ordinated postgraduate dissertations and supervised many students on various masters programmes. She took part in PhD supervision teams, supervising one of them to completion. Her specialist areas are in ‘time and temporality’ in consumer behaviour, organic food decision-making, innovation adoption, consumer value, sustainable and disposal behaviours, among others.
Dr Tim Sellick
Tim began the development of his sales and marketing expertise as the Director of a Direct Marketing agency where he worked for over a decade. He then moved into academia after completing his Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education) delivering programmes for Birmingham City University for Undergraduate, Post Graduate, and for professional participants. Tim then then joined Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford in 2009 to work in Executive Education.
Since 2011 Tim has worked at Worcester Business School where he teaches Marketing Communications, Marketing Strategy, and Sales Management. His management roles within the School include the Director of Post Graduate Studies and the Director of Corporate Programmes.
Tim is a multi-award winning case writer and has authored a winning case in the EFMD’s Excellence in Practice Awards twice in the last three years. Tim is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (and a Chartered Marketer), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Association Academy.
Roger Saunders has been a lecturer for 16 years teaching on a range of marketing and advertising modules. His specialist discipline area is in the use of metaphors in advertising. As well as numerous papers delivered to the Academy of Marketing he is also the author of a chapter on advertising in a specialist German wine marketing text. His current area of research interest is in teaching and learning, specifically the use of group work in both formative and summative contexts, as well as enhancing student engagement through innovations in teaching practice.
Roger spent several years working in various different hotels before working for a telephone marketing company which was taken over by Reed Business Call, part of Reed Business Publishing, where he was promoted to Account Executive. After completing his Master’s degree Roger worked for six and a half years for an international training organisation, as a Sales & Marketing Consultant. During this time he worked with a number of major national and international organisations, including Standard Life, Safeway, Tetra Pak and Procter and Gamble.
Roger is the Student Experience Tutor, StARs Coordinator and Joint Honours Coordinator.

Full-time tuition fees

The standard annual fee for full-time UK and EU students enrolling in 2017 will be no more than £9,250, subject to approval by Parliament.
