Before applying

You should first discuss your research interests, qualifications and potential research project with potential supervisors and/or the course leader prior to submitting an application. This course will help you to develop both intellectual and technical competencies in research. It will prepare you for academic careers by covering the fundamental components of academic research: developing a topic, literature review, method and analysis, and the planning and execution of a substantial piece of written or practical research. Through the 'apprenticeship' model, your work will be closely integrated with that of an expert supervisor and with an academic department giving you valuable experience of contributing to and working within a community of scholars. This will allow possible development towards further postgraduate research such as a PhD. Former graduates from the MRes programme have gone on to be awarded competitive, fully-funded 3 year PhD bursaries in the region.

\n

An MRes in Film will also help you to progress towards a career in equivalent research-based employment. This might include, for example, in the media and film industries, arts organisations or cinemas, as an artist or media practitioner, or work for a relevant government organisation, NGO, production company, museum. In the context of an ever-expanding information economy, an MRes would prepare you for work in any organisation looking for literate and research trained staff. Further support will be available to you via the Research School's Student Researcher Development Programme. This provides workshops in, amongst other things, oral presentations, public engagement, writing CVs, bid writing, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

You will be taught via a combination of classroom modules and supervisor-supported independent study. Lectures are used to impart the core knowledge essential to each component of the course, while also, generally, being interactive. Analysis, problem-solving skills, and, most importantly, the application of knowledge to your own project are all developed through interactive seminars and workshops. On RSDP4001 and MHCA4001, both lectures and workshops are delivered principally via guest sessions in which the varied expertise of teaching staff across arts, humanities and the University as a whole supports the development of the broad, rounded skills that the MRes is designed to develop. Research skills are developed through classroom activities and assessments (as described above) but also in conjunction with supervisors on the supervisor-led modules MHCA4002 and MHCA4005. This close working with the supervisor, who will be an expert in your field of study, will foster the more specific research skills required for your subject. By successful completion of the course, you will be beginning to develop as an expert in your field.

\n

Meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least 8 occasions in the year (for full-time students) and approximately 4 (for part-time). The personal academic tutor is likely to be your supervisor. By combining teaching, independent study, academic support from Student Services and Library Services, and personal academic tutoring we seek to enable you to reflect on your progress and to build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will help you to flourish and be successful.

\n

Typically contact time will be structured around:

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement. A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support through the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be successful.

"},{"type":"accordionItem","value":[{"title":"Teaching","content":"

Throughout the course you will be taught through a variety of methods. These will focus around small informal lectures on a topic and then a viewing, discussion or practical exploration of the topic. As film making is at the heart of what we do we put film making at the core of as many sessions as possible so that you, the student, get as many hours behind the camera as possible.

\n

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least four occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course.

\n

There will also be master classes from industry professionals, screenings and trips to widen your learning throughout the course.

"},{"title":"Contact time","content":"

In a typical week you will have around 15-16 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study. Typically contact time will be structured around:

\n
    \n
  • 8 hours of interactive workshops
  • \n
  • 4 hours of (large group) lectures
  • \n
  • 4 hours of seminars in groups of around 12 students
  • \n
"},{"title":"Independent self-study","content":"

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 22 hours of personal self-study per week. Typically, this will involve completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations.

\n

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.

"},{"title":"Teaching staff","content":"

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes senior academics, professional practitioners with industry experience, demonstrators and technical officers. All of our full-time academic staff are Fellows of the HEA.

\n

Our visiting tutors are all industry professionals who have directed feature films, music videos or worked at major broadcasters such as the BBC.

"},{"title":"Assessment","content":"

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or 'formative' assignments.

\n

Each module has one or more formal or 'summative' assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade. Assessment methods include film production and presentation.

\n

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken.

"},{"title":"Feedback","content":"

You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate. Feedback from tutors and peers is available in every session where practical work is undertaken. Feedback is also available from your tutors via email, Skype or in one to one tutorials.

We aim to provide feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.

What will you study?

\n

The degree is taught as a single programme to support you in developing an individual studio practice. You will be expected to be in The Art House Studios as much as possible to independently build your practice.

\n

The course is structured around four key aspects of studio practice: Making, Research, Exhibition, and Site. Each year you will undertake four modules (two for joint honours students) that will engage with these aspects and will build to give you a holistic understanding of how your practice is developing. These modules are all taught together so that each week your independent making time will be supported by a number of contact sessions with the tutors.

\n

Year 1

\n

Year 1 focuses on material experimentation through a series of structured making tasks. You can make drawings, paintings, prints, objects, sound works, films and performances, all supported by tutorials groups critiques, readings and lectures.

\n

You will be introduced to artists, contexts, films, concepts and philosophies which you can incorporate into your practice. You will build a set of critical skills to read images, events and environments as well as research strategies for drawing and image-making. You will develop descriptive writing skills and basic academic research methods. You will read, draw, make photographs and films and write about what you are looking at and what you are making.

\n

Year 2

\n

Year 2 focuses on public exhibition-making outside of the studios. You will make a proposal about the practice that you want to make. You will learn to work as a group on joint projects and presentations. At the end of the year, you will curate a public group exhibition to show your work.

\n

Students at The Art House are encouraged to engage with the culture and politics of the wider world. The site strand considers how art-making is situated within the world and where it appears. This includes exhibition visits, museums, archives, artist-run spaces, and guided walks.

\n

Year 3

\n

Year 3 focuses on independent practice and the Degree Show. You will present your first solo show and build a portfolio for the future.

\n

Imagining how your work meets the world is central to the degree. Throughout the course, you will get the opportunity to present your work in the gallery and project spaces in The Art House and get feedback from specialist staff, visiting artists and your peers. You will get to engage with artists making in the spaces as part of The Art House residencies and develop technical skills for how to present and display your work. In the third year, you will construct your own solo show in The Art House and present your work as part of the Institute of Arts Degree Show.

You are taught through a combination of:

\n

Tutorials
The studio tutorial - that is the discussion between tutor and student in the presence of your work - remains the principle form
of teaching and learning in a fine art education.

\n

Group Crits
Like the tutorial the group crit forms an essential, critical strand of the teaching and feedback that you will encounter. These are opportunities to present finished work or work in progress to a group of peers, that will then be discussed.

\n

Peer Review
Students will perform peer reviews on each other’s work according to the learning outcomes and grading criteria for the module

\n

Seminars
These sessions focus on the exchange of ideas, promoting argument and debate. They will often be delivered in response to something that you have been asked to look at, this could be a reading, a film or an exhibition.

\n

Lectures
These are platforms for delivery of contextual and critical discourse. During these sessions you will develop your knowledge around subject areas, disciplines, and thematic concepts.

\n

Workshops
These are used to develop your skills and will often take the form of a demonstration before providing you with individual and/or group opportunities to practice and extend these skills through mini projects with technical support.

\n

Studio time
This is a crucial aspect of the course. You are expected to develop your own areas of study. You are expected to take this forward through research, experimentation and the development of a range of skills required to create a body of work.

\n

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least 4 occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course.

"},{"title":"Contact time","content":"

In a typical week you will have around 12 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

\n

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

\n
    \n
  • Tutorials
  • \n
  • Group Crits
  • \n
  • Seminars
  • \n
  • Lectures
  • \n
  • Presentations
  • \n
  • Workshops
  • \n
"},{"title":"Independent self-study","content":"

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 25 hours of personal self-study per week. Typically this will involve working on set-assignments in levels 4 and 5 and the development of a portfolio through studio practice in level 6.

\n

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.

"},{"title":"Teaching staff","content":"

You will be taught by a teaching team from across Fine Art, whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the modules on the course and includes respected senior academics and professional practitioners with substantial, current industry experience.

\n

Teaching is informed by research, consultancy and professional practice, four of whom are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy and hold a PG Cert in Learning and Teaching.

\n

You can learn more about the staff by visiting our staff profiles.

"},{"title":"Assessment","content":"

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or 'formative' assignments. Each module has one or more formal or 'summative' assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

\n

Assessment methods include presentations, portfolios of practical work, critical writing, exhibitions.

\n

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken, but a typical formal summative assessment pattern for each year of the course is:

\n

Year 1

\n

2 x Portfolios of Artworks
2 x Writing/Research/Making Assignments
1 x Short Essays
1 x Learning Journal
1 x Reflective Statement
1 x Zine
1 x Online project
1 x Exhibition proposal

\n

Year 2

\n

3 x Portfolio of Artworks
4 x Reflective Statements
1 x Exhibition proposal
2 x Writing/Research/Making Assignments

\n

Year 3

\n

2 x Portfolio of Artworks
1 x Solo Exhibition
1 x Final Exhibition
3 x Reflective Statements
1 x Critical Report

"},{"title":"Feedback","content":"

You will receive feedback on assessments. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

Fine Art with Psychology has been specifically designed for anyone wanting to develop skills in Fine Art but has an additional interest or ambition in using these skills in a wider context. The course runs in parallel with the Fine Art degree and is taught primarily in the new purpose-built studios of the Art House building in Worcester city centre. On completion of this course you will have a well-developed artistic practice and a thorough grounding in psychology.

\n

The advantage of this design over a joint honours is that it presents a coherent and identifiable route into a range of career opportunities. The balance of the course is such that you will be able to develop enough high level skills and understanding of both Fine Art and psychology to pursue career opportunities in these areas. The combination provides additional opportunities for you to develop and expand your career prospects further for example in, arts therapies, health and wellbeing and education.

\n

The course is a combination of evidence and problem-based learning together with the application of theory into practice with a focus on socially-engaged art and art’s role in the wider society. Over the three years, you will have the opportunity to develop practical, technical, conceptual and creative skills with the ability to conduct research, critical analysis and application of your understanding in a range of contexts.

\n

In the first and second years the flavour is more towards the Fine Art related aspects to allow you to develop skills in these areas whilst developing the necessary skills and knowledge in psychology to embed and apply your learning throughout the course.

\n

In the third year additional psychology modules are available, which enables you to choose the balance of your final year and so steer the degree towards your own interests and ambitions.

\n

Completing the course with a good second class honours degree will enable 'access onto one of our related post-graduate courses.

Fine Art with Psychology draws upon two distinct yet complementary disciplines and the teaching reflects this. Across the course you will experience a variety of methods including Studio Practice, interactive practical workshops, lectures, seminars, fieldwork and practical activities.

\n

All these forms enable the application of learning through a combination of practice, discussion, problem-based learning and smaller group activities. Single sessions may involve lectures, workshops, seminars and practical sessions; site based work and formative exercises and there is an expectation of sustained studio practice in art.

\n

Theory is taught through practice to enable you to gain a real understanding on how to apply research in a practical and professional context.

Psychology is normally lecture-seminar based but practical, problem-based learning is also a key component of the delivery, as well as blended and online delivery of course content.

\n

Seminars enable the discussion and understanding of topics covered in lectures and practical session are focussed on developing specific skills and applied individual and group work, and make extensive use of formative feedback to shape your learning and confidence throughout modules.

\n

You will be allocated a Personal Academic Tutor who will be accessible to you throughout your time here via a number of scheduled sessions in each year plus private meetings for help and advice as you need it.

\n

The emphasis is on enabling you to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment as well as academic achievement.

\n

A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support from Student Services and Library Services as well as the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will help you towards your goals. The course makes extensive use of Blackboard as an e-learning tool and staff have increasingly trialled the use of technology to enhance learning.

In a typical week, you will have around 12 contact hours of teaching plus tutorials depending upon the optional modules selected. In the final year, you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study and work placement opportunities.

Fine Art modules are taught in 3 hour blocks typically in the form time will be of lecture-seminars, workshops, individual and group presentations and tutorials.

\n

Due to the nature the Fine Art studio culture, in which students conduct much of their independent study in their studios, they often interact with course tutors in an informal way.

In addition there will be a combination of scheduled and optional tutorial time.

In addition to the above contact time, students are expected to engage with around 20-25 hours of personal study per week. Typically this will involve individual and/or group work on projects and tasks, preparing for assignments, trips to see work and going to the library. Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the Hive library, the virtual learning environment, extensive access to vast electronic learning resources and of course, purpose built contemporary art studios.

Assessment takes the form of formative (informal) and summative (formal) assessment.

\n

Formative assessments carry no weighting but are really important and designed to help you achieve your best in the final summative assessments. Formative assessment can take different forms such as student support teams, informal peer assessment or rehearsed presentations and performances. It is also embedded in your ongoing engagement with tutors' and is part of the individual tutorial system.

\n

Assessment normally requires a combination of practical work and critical reflection, for example a performance or group presentation with subsequent oral assessment or written analysis). Written assessment is varied and some modules may require different forms such as essay, contextual analysis, blog, creative writing or learning journal. There is also one formal written examination in the third year.

This module offers an overview of crime scene processing and is taught by a previously operational Crime Scene Manager. The roles of individuals in association with a crime scene is discussed, specifically the role of the Crime Scene Investigator (CSI). Recording of a crime scene including notes, diagrams and routine still and video photography is considered and practiced in our on-site Crime Scene House, as is the collection, packaging, labelling, storage and reporting of physical evidence.

\n

Both volume and major scene scenes are considered and the module will give you a flavour of whether you wish to consider this role in your future career. The module leader has strong links with West Mercia Police and guest speakers come in to provide further operational context. The assessment takes the form of a major scene and even includes a Senior Investigating Officer from the police.

Employability

\n

This course provides you with the core biology skills and knowledge to make you suitable candidates for all the biological careers available to those students on the mainstream biology programmes as well as forensic areas. These include:

\n
    \n
  • Research
  • \n
  • Biological testing
  • \n
  • Teacher training
  • \n
  • Medical sales
  • \n
  • Diagnostics testing
  • \n
  • Crime scene investigation
  • \n
  • Forensic biology / sciences
  • \n
  • Civil services
  • \n
  • The police force
  • \n
  • Further study - Masters / PhD.
  • \n
\n

There is a good employability rate for this course upon successful completion with our graduates going on to enjoy a variety of opportunities from Forensic toxicology, Forensic DNA analysis, Science based laboratory positions and further studies which include Phd/MSc/MRes in a number of areas such as Genetics / Molecular studies, Forensic Anthropology and teaching qualifications.

\n

This course prepares you for a range of careers in different fields and services, including the police force, fire service, local government and planning, laboratory and environmental research, Civil Service or teaching and all biology careers available to those on a traditional biology degree course (due to the unique combination of forensic and core biology course content).

\n

You will have opportunities to develop a wide range of intellectual, practical and social skills. These include primary research using both quantitative and qualitative techniques, data collection and analysis, oral and verbal communication, critical evaluation and laboratory techniques.

\n

In addition to transferable academic skills, you will develop skills and the confidence to operate in both the forensic area and a wide variety of other work environments.

\n

For example, Biologists who can look at evidence and make measured and reasoned arguments are not only required in scientific fields but also in the media, retailing and finance to ensure there is a balanced view relating to new technology and the estimation of risk.

\n

There is also a need for people to be able to explain these scientific arguments in 'lay' terms, not only in teaching but also in a wide range of other vocations.

Forensic Science Team Recognised in Prestigious Awards

\n

The University of Worcester’s Forensic Science team was awarded second place at the HE Innovate Awards, which is open to all universities across the UK, in the most innovative hybrid / blended learning project category. The team created an immersive and interactive crime scene simulation package for its students and was recognised for its innovative work creating virtual crime scenes.

\n

These interactive tasks mock-up incidents that crime scene investigators might be called out to, such as a hit and run, a burglary or murder. The simulation package presented students with a range of images of the ‘scene’ from different angles, and some 360-degree images. Users are given initial information, for example, what has occurred, their role and the requirement for them at the scene. Students then have to look around the scene working out what areas are of importance.

\n

There are a number of “hot spots” within a scene which can include additional documentation and participants put their knowledge and techniques into action, working through a series of questions, prompts and requirements to identify and analyse the evidence and draw conclusions.

\n

You can find out more about this award in our recent press release.

In a typical week you will have at least 12 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

\n

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

\n
    \n
  • 4 hours of lectures
  • \n
  • 11 hours of supervised laboratory practicals
  • \n
  • 1 hour of group workshops

Typically, this will involve going over your lecture notes and reading around the topic in order to reinforce the content, completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations.

\n

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.

Postgraduate research students who have undertaken teacher training may also contribute to the teaching of seminars under the supervision of the module leader. Teaching is informed by the research and consultancy, and 93 per cent of course lecturers in the Biological Sciences have a higher education teaching qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy. Twenty per cent also have Teaching Fellowships from the University of Worcester. You can learn more about the staff by visiting our staff profiles.

Students are taught through a combination of different learning and teaching methods. Lectures allow for the presentation and introduction of key topics, including both traditional and contemporary sources, which allow students to begin their learning. This is then supported by seminars that enable the discussion and development of understanding of topics covered in lectures. Subject specific skills are the focus of practical classes and workshops (for example, understanding statistical data analysis).

\n

The course also has a keen focus on experiential learning, as there is good evidence that this can greatly enhance the student learning experience. Therefore, such methods will be used such as problem-based learning, whereby students will apply theory and content from psychology to address real world, global issues (e.g. the role of AI in the workplace, tackling climate change and global pandemics). Such global issues will be themes that run through the course, and as such will be covered elsewhere in other learning and teaching.

\n

Furthermore, the role of research in the learning and teaching methods of this course will be central to all areas. Such research-informed teaching and learning will include practical research classes where students put into practice research methods they have learnt as well as focusing on research in directed study, group activities, assessments and problem-based learning.

\n

The University places emphasis on enabling students to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip them for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement.  A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support from Student Services and Library Services, and also the Personal Academic Tutoring system enables students to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will help them to flourish and be successful.

\n

In addition, meetings with Personal Academic Tutors (PAT) are scheduled on at least four occasions in the first year. This will include two group sessions as part of modules, and individual meetings. Students are scheduled to meet their PAT’s on three occasions in each of the other years of a course.

"},{"title":"Contact time","content":"

In a typical week, students will have around 10-12 contact hours of teaching.  The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year there is normally slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

\n

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

\n
    \n
  • Lectures
  • \n
  • Seminars
  • \n
  • Workshops
  • \n
  • Tutorials
  • \n
  • Use of course Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) for online activities
  • \n
"},{"title":"Independent self-study","content":"

In addition to the contact time, students are expected to undertake around 24 hours of personal self-study per week.  Typically, this will involve completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, and preparing coursework assignments and presentations.

\n

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.

"},{"title":"Teaching staff","content":"

Students will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes staff from a range of psychology backgrounds including Counselling Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology, Occupational Psychology and with research specialisms such as emotions, evolutionary approaches to behaviour, positive psychology and individual differences.

\n

Teaching is informed by research and consultancy, and the majority of lecturers on the course have (or are currently working towards) a higher education teaching qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.

\n

You can learn more about the staff by visiting our staff profiles

"},{"title":"Assessment","content":"

A range of assessment methods are used to enable students to achieve and demonstrate the learning outcomes. Literacy and critical thinking around psychology is developed and assessed through assignments such as essays, literature reviews and critical reviews of journal papers. Quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis report writing assessments aim to develop skills such as problem-solving, research, organisation, planning, and effective communication. Effective and fluent written, oral and visual communication is enhanced further through assessments that use posters and PowerPoint presentations, video and webpage design; whilst the use of group work for assessment enables better team working and the development of leadership skills. Finally a number of modules use weblogs, e-portfolios and case studies to develop and assess a range of skills including reflection and independent learning.

\n

Furthermore the course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments.  Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

\n

Assessment methods include; Essay, Exam, Practical Report File, Reflective Log, Personal Development Plan, Psychology Applied Learning Scenario, Public Communication, Research Funding Bid, Literature Review, Research Proposal, Presentation (group and individual), Research Project, Poster Presentation, Case Study, Portfolio, Policy Briefing, Extended Essay, Workbook

\n

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken, but a typical formal summative assessment pattern for each year of the course is:
