Night two of this Christmas themed public lecture series explores the popularity behind Christmas pop songs, and the connection between horror and Christmas stories.

Talk 1: Hiding under the (Christmas) covers: Enduring nostalgia and the Christmas pop-canon

Lou Aimes-Hill

Everyone's got a favourite festive tune and every year the same songs surface on our radio stations, playlists, compilations and in moments of ubiquitous daily listening.

But what brings the same songs back year after year? What makes a cracker of a Christmas tune? And have they more in common with the traditional Christmas carol than we would care to admit?

Talk 2: Deck the Halls with Horror: The unlikely relationship between Christmas and the horror genre

Charley Barnes

This talk looks to Christmas films and Christmas stories and explores the darkness lurking below the season of lights and tinsel. Join us to step outside into the midwinter darkness and find what sinister things skulk beyond the firelight.
