Join us for Birdwatching for Wellbeing, a series of guided walks around St John's Campus where you can discover local wildlife while enjoying the wellbeing benefits of spending time in nature.
Led by Dr Mike Wheeler, Lecturer in Biological Sciences and keen birdwatcher, these relaxed and friendly sessions are suitable for complete beginners as well as anyone with an existing interest in birds and nature. No special equipment or previous experience is needed.
Following each walk, participants are invited to join us for a free hot drink and informal chat at our “Fancy a Cuppa?” wellbeing session.
Places are limited and booking is required. Students can book via firstpoint online and staff can book via iTrent.
What is Birdwatching for Wellbeing?
Birdwatching for Wellbeing is a relaxed outdoor wellbeing activity designed to help students:
- Take a break from study pressures and busy schedules
- Spend time outdoors in green spaces
- Practise mindfulness and being present in the moment
- Learn about local wildlife and the natural environment
- Meet other students in a welcoming and supportive setting
The focus is not on identifying every bird you see. Instead, the walks encourage curiosity, observation, connection with nature, and taking time to notice the world around you.
What can I expect?
During the walk, you might:
- Learn how to recognise common bird species
- Listen to birdsong and observe bird behaviour
- Explore different habitats around campus
- Take a mindful walk at a relaxed pace
- Chat with other participants or simply enjoy the surroundings
The walks are informal and accessible. You are welcome to come on your own or bring friends. Comfortable clothing and suitable footwear are recommended.
Why nature helps wellbeing
Research has shown that spending time in nature can help reduce stress, improve mood, support concentration, and increase feelings of wellbeing. Activities such as birdwatching encourage us to slow down, focus our attention, and connect with the environment around us.
Birdwatching for Wellbeing is not about being an expert or ticking species off a list. It's about taking time for yourself, enjoying the outdoors, and discovering the benefits that nature can bring to your wellbeing.
