Do you love dance and want to make it part of your life? Our Dance and Applied Practice course puts employability at the centre of everything we do. It's all about exploring all the available careers in dance to find the ones that are right for you. 

There's probably lots of careers you've never really thought much about: private dance school owner, dance scientist, teacher, dance specialist, dance movement therapist, freelance choreographer, outreach work, dance physiotherapist just to name a few. There are even lots of different types of performance, from stage to holiday camps, from the real world to online.

Our highly practical course focuses on dance in the real world. It's a fresh new type of degree, looking beyond just traditional company roles and allowing you to explore all your options and giving you the skills you need to succeed.

It's a degree for those of us who want to spend their life working in an area they are passionate about. It's a degree for those of us who couldn't imagine not having dance as part of what they do.

Entry requirements

112 UCAS Tariff points including GCSE Mathematics and English Language at Grade C/4 or above A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS formerly known as CRB) may be required for some modules

Dance experience is essential for this course though contemporary training is not a requirement for this course. We do not require a formal qualification in dance though as a rough guide you should be around Level 5 (Intermediate) or equivalent in any style of dance or be doing a BTEC/A Level (or equivalent) in dance.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for audition and interview.

Teaching and assessment

How will you be taught?

You are taught through a combination of:

  • Practical classes (for example technique, dance making)
  • Interactive workshops (for example learning about professional careers, dance teaching)
  • Seminars and lectures (for example dance science, research)
  • Authentic learning experiences (work placement, real-life projects)

Seminars enable the discussion and development of understanding of topics covered in lectures whereas authentic learning experiences allow you to apply your learning to real-life scenarios. You have an opportunity to undertake a semester long placement in the third year of the course, and a to create an extended project supervised by a university tutor.

We try and phrase all our learning around real life experiences so you will perform, collaborate, teach, research and lead and discover skills you didn't even know that you had.

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least 4 occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course.

You will perform, collaborate, teach, research and lead. You will develop a personalised training program including elements of technique, strength and conditioning, nutrition and psychology. We spend time training you in strong contemporary technique so that by the end of the course, you will be in position to go out into professional practice. We will also guide you into developing and improving your existing skills in individual styles such as jazz, ballet or street.

Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 12-16 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on the optional modules selected and in the final year you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

Typically class contact time will be structured around:

  • 6-8 hours of technique
  • 4-8 hours of practical activities such as dance making or practical application of learning
  • 4 hours of interactive workshops or authentic learning experiences
  • 2-4 hours of seminars or lectures

In year three there is slightly less seminars and workshops to allow for independent study and placement activities.

Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 24-28 hours of personal self-study per week. Typically, this will involve:

  • Completing online activities
  • Working on choreography
  • Practice / rehearsal
  • Reading, research and watching videos
  • Working on individual and group projects
  • Preparing for assignments and learning experiences
  • Reflection and evaluation

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.


The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or 'formative' assignments. Each module has one or more formal or 'summative' assessments which are graded and count towards the overall module grade.

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken, but a typical formal summative assessment pattern for each year of the course is:

You will receive feedback on practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback on examination performance is available upon request from the module leader. Feedback is intended to support learning and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors as appropriate.

We aim to provide you with feedback on formal course work assessments within 20 working days of hand-in.

Meet the team

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes a mix of academics and professional practitioners with industry experience. We also sometimes bring in visiting lecturers with expertise in specific areas.

Teaching is informed by research and the majority of permanent course lecturers have a higher education teaching qualification or are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.


Dr Paul Golz

Paul is an experienced teacher, choreographer, dancer and researcher. Following his initial training at the Centre for Professional Dance Training in Edinburgh he trained as a Graham dancer, however it is somatic based technique that remains his true passion, especially in contact improvisation and creative partner work.

Paul has worked professionally with Misfitted Dance and Birmingham Opera. In 2011, he set up his own company, Ephemeris Dance following his interest in Dance and Digital. He has choreographed work in this arena under Arts Council grants for both his own company and ReadySaltedCode.

How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in the academic year 2019/20 will be £9,250 per year.

Additional costs

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying. The amounts vary between courses.

As part of this course we will arrange for you to attend professional dance productions. There is a cost associated with these performances and other optional field trips. There may also be costs associated with costumes, dance wear and hoodies for any performances you may be involved in.

We have over 1,000 rooms across our halls of residence. With rooms to suit every budget and need, from our 'Traditional Hall' at £102 per week to 'En-suite Extra' at £165 per week (2019/20 prices).
