This four year Integrated Masters in Cricket Coaching and Management was the first course of its type in the UK. Our innovative combination of cricket coaching, management and development will equip you with operational, strategic and project management expertise to enable you to take a dynamic approach to leading innovation and change within the sector. 

The course is supported by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Worcestershire County Cricket Club and County Cricket Boards including Gloucestershire & Worcestershire. - providing opportunities for work experience and placements.   

The degree will enhance your employment prospects through both vocationally recognised cricket coaching qualifications and relevant cricket coaching opportunities, both domestically and overseas.

An Integrated Master's degree is a four year programme which combines undergraduate and postgraduate study into a single course. A BSc in Cricket Coaching and Management is an exit award option at the end of year 3.

Pat Brown

Graduate, Pat was selected for the England Cricket squad for the Twenty20 for the five-match series in New Zealand in 2019. During his time at University, Pat was awarded a scholarship within the University’s partnership with Worcestershire Cricket Club, which allowed him to combine playing for the County side, Worcestershire Rapids, with a degree.

Pat has combined elite sport with his academic studies, and his impressive form in recent seasons has now led to his call up to the national side.

Recent Worcester graduate, Jess Ward, has secured the exciting position of the Women’s and Girls’ Club Development Officer for Worcestershire Cricket Board Ltd. She will be responsible for driving Women’s and Girls’ growth throughout the county, developing the already established Hub Clubs and expanding on the success of Women’s Softball Festivals from the past two years.

Jess says she is “delighted to get the job and to be able to utilise everything I learnt during my time at University together with my huge passion for cricket and to expand on a growing Women and Girls’ interest across the county."

Steve Silk

Steve Silk

After graduating from the University of Worcester with a sports degree, Steve embarked on a career in sports development. He became the Wiltshire Cricket Development Manager before moving to a similar role at the Gloucestershire County Cricket Board in 2009, Steve then became the county's Chief Executive Officer and is now their Chief Operating Officer.

With such a vast experience within cricket development, management and coaching , Steve was consulted on the new course, he concluded... 

"The Integrated Masters in Cricket Coaching & Management at the University of Worcester offers a great deal to prospective students. The course successfully blends cricket specific content with key transferable skills, that will provide graduates with an excellent skill set to be successful in both sport and business.

Daryl Mitchell

Daryl is a UW Sports Studies graduate and current Worcestershire player. Local born Daryl, has played over 500 games for the County, captaining them for 6 years. As well as playing, Daryl is the Chief Operating Officer at the Professional Cricketers Association.

Kieran Patel

Kieran is a current cricket coaching and management undergraduate student at the University of Worcester. As well as completing his level 2 cricket coaching award, Kieran has engaged in a vast range of vocational experiences alongside his degree to support his keen interest in performance analysis. Reflecting on his experiences Kieran stated:

"Studying the degree at the University has given me an excellent insight into the cricket industry, through some fantastic work-related opportunities. I have been able to gain performance analysis experience with the England Physical Disability Team at two international events here in Worcester and these experiences helped me greatly to secure a performance analysis internship with Worcestershire County Cricket Club and a performance analysis contract with the Central Sparks women's team.".

Thea Brookes

Thea graduated from her Physical Education degree at the University of Worcester and commenced employment at Malvern College in Worcestershire. During her 6 years at Malvern College her roles included - coaching, teaching, house and academic tutor and she later became the head of girls cricket.

Alongside her University studies and role at Malvern College, Thea has developed her playing career and she currently plays for Central Sparks and Warwickshire. She has previously represented Yorkshire Diamonds, Loughborough Lightening and the Southern Vipers in the KIA Super League.

Thea has recently commenced the role as Head of Girls Sports Development at Wellington College following a spell as a PE teacher and Head of Girls cricket at Royal Grammar School Worcester.

Ian Martin

Ian Martin (ECB - Head of Disability Cricket).

We have worked closely with the University of Worcester, Worcestershire County Cricket Club and the Worcestershire County Cricket Board over the years to host several disability cricket tournaments. This includes the 2018 and 2019 Physical Disability World Series.

The integrated masters course offers a great deal to those wishing to help grow and develop in all aspects of the game. Added to the integrated masters course, the University, in partnership with key external partners has fantastic plans for a new International Inclusive Cricket Centre. This is a hugely exciting development which brings together the cricket world's leading disability programme and the globally acknowledged academic leader in inclusive sport.

Hemaka Pathiranage (Hemi)

Hemaka Pathiranage (Hemi), a former Sri Lankan Under 15 and 19 cricket player, completed his Undergraduate Degree in Sports Coaching Science at the University of Worcester, before becoming the Vice President of the University's Students' Union's Sport and Activities program.  Alongside this role, Hemi completed a Masters in Sports Coaching Science. 

During his time in Worcester, Hemi was a pivotal member of the University's men's cricket program where he led the bowling attack. Outside the University, Hemi was an active member of his club: Old Elizabethans CC. Subsequently, Hemi has returned to Sri Lanka where he is the head cricket coach at S. Thomas' College, Bandarawela.

Hemi says:

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Worcester. The staff and students were hugely supportive and helped me to settle in and make the most of my time in the UK. The knowledge and experience I gained from my studies and from being involved with cricket in Worcestershire has assisted me greatly in developing the cricket program here at S. Thomas'. The opportunity for me to travel to the UK to study, to experience different cultures and to play in different cricket environments has been invaluable in my development". 

Professional Cricketers

Two of our University graduates, who are now professional cricketers, Dillon Pennington and Pat Brown played in the inaugural 'Hundred' competition for the Birmingham Phoenix. NB: Students can opt to leave the Integrated Masters in Cricket Coaching and Management and join the BSc equivalent. Upon successful completion of level 6 students are eligible for the BSc (Hons) Cricket Coaching and Management exit award.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching and assessment

The University places emphasis on enabling you as a student to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and future employment, as well as academic achievement. A mixture of independent study, teaching and academic support from Student Services and Library Services alongside the personal academic tutoring system enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will help you to flourish and be successful.

Teaching

Utilising facilities such as the University Arena, you are taught through a combination of interactive workshops, lectures, seminars and practical activities. Interactive workshops take a variety of formats and are intended to enable the application of learning through discussion and small group activities. Seminars enable discussion and the development of understanding related to the topics covered in lectures. Practical sessions are focused on developing subject specific skills and applied, individual and group work.

In addition, meetings with personal academic tutors are scheduled on at least four occasions in the first year and three occasions in each of the other years of a course. Level 6 and 7 commences with a 2-3 week intensive period that will take place at the end of Level 5 and 6. This program prepares students for the distance learning mode of study in semester 1 at Level 6 and 7.

The vocational focus of semester 1 at Level 6 and 7 could permit students to engage in overseas cricketing experiences, whilst completing credits for the degree. Alternatively, students may choose to align themselves with domestic cricketing programs in these periods of study.  This platform provides students with the opportunity to complete two overseas placements in the period between October and January. 

 

 

 

Contact time

In a typical week you will have around 12-16 contact hours of teaching. The precise contact hours will depend on the modules selected. Semester 1 at Level 6 and 7 will be delivered online and in semester 2 at Level 7 you will normally have slightly less contact time in order to do more independent study.

Typically contact time will be a balanced blend of:

  • Practical sessions
  • Theoretical lectures 
  • Blended learning
  • Seminars (in small study groups)
  • Module-specific tutorials

 In addition, you will be able to access 8 hours of tutorial support during the course of the Sports Research Project study in the final year. You will also receive structured Research Project support in the intensive preparation period.

 

Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 25 hours of personal self-study per week. Typically, this will involve completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations.

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including The Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources.

Timetables

Timetables are normally available one month before registration. Please note that whilst we try to be as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week; and some classes can be scheduled in the evenings.

 

 

Teaching staff

You will be taught by a teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. Assessment

The course provides opportunities to test understanding and learning informally through the completion of practice or ‘formative’ assignments. Each module has one or more formal or ‘summative’ assessment which is graded and counts towards the overall module grade. 

Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, case studies, practical coaching, presentations and a final year research project.

The precise assessment requirements for an individual student in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken, but a typical formal summative assessment pattern for each year of the course is: 

Year 1:

Written essays, coaching portfolio, paired and individual presentations, practical coaching episodes, multiple-choice exams.

Year 2:

Coaching portfolio; essays, presentations, poster presentation, oral defence of work, practical coaching episodes, case studies, grant applications, exams (module selection dependant).

Year 3:

Reflective reports, essays, presentations, coaching portfolios, practical coaching episodes, placement evidence.

Year 4:

Individual presentation, portfolios, essays, research project

International Inclusive Cricket Centre

The University of Worcester, in conjunction with key external partners are planning the development of a new International Inclusive Cricket Centre to be based on the Universities of Worcester's Severn Campus. The centre will provide a home for elite, grassroots and recreational players of all abilities and disabilities. The proposed development will be based on the same site as the Universities existing 2,000 seat indoor Arena, less than half a mile from New Road, the home of Worcestershire County Cricket Club and the Worcestershire County Cricket Board.

Craig Williams

Craig is an engaging and innovative teaching practitioner who blends learning and applied experiences to develop student employability, both during and after their studies.

His extensive network has led to a range of interesting placement and job opportunities for students at the University.

Craig is passionate about most sports, and in his words, still attempts to play football and cricket when the body allows! 

Dr Don Vinson

Professor Don Vinson

Don's specialist area is sport coaching. He is driven by balancing his roles as teacher, researcher and practitioner, applying his expertise in learning and pedagogic theory to all areas of his work. Don has written extensively in the area of sport coaching, performance analysis, leadership and higher education pedagogy. In particular, his recent research focuses on Coach Developer learning through the perspective of Landscapes of Practice in various contexts.

Don is a member of the International Council for Coach Education (ICCE) Research Committee, founder-member and Secretary of the Cluster for Research into Coaching (CRiC) Executive Board and is the UK representative for the International Advisory Board for the Teaching Games for Understanding Special Interest Group. Don is currently the Lead for the Coach Developer and Performance Analyst Research Group.

Don has worked with a large number of National Governing Bodies (NGBs) including the Football Association, Europe Netball, British Cycling, British Gymnastics, British Rowing and the British Equestrian Federation. Don has also consulted for many influential bodies within the sport sector such as UK Sport, UK Coaching and the League Managers’ Association.

Don is passionate about most sports and, in addition to hockey, can also be regularly found playing squash, badminton and golf.

Dr Paul Blakey

Dr Paul Blakey

Paul is Senior Lecturer in Sport Business Management and joined the School of Sport and Exercise Science in November 2015. Paul has considerable experience within the higher education sector having previously been course leader for Sport MSc programmes at Northumbria University and the University of Chester. He is also Visiting Professor at NEOMA Business School in Paris.

Paul’s PhD thesis, from the University of Manchester, focused upon strategic marketing practices of small and medium-sized businesses in the leisure industry. Prior to embarking on a career in academia, Paul was employed by several sports, leisure and hospitality companies, most notably working as an Assistant Manager with a leading private sector entertainment company.

Paul is the author/co-author of several sport marketing textbooks including the first digital sport marketing book published by Routledge in 2020. He has worked on collaborative, and individual, research publications, conference presentations, in-field event impact studies for sports governing bodies and co-ordinated a nationwide research project for a UK-based leisure corporation. He has supervised PhD students on subjects including surf brands, sports volunteers and sport tourism destinations.

Michelle Morgan

Michelle Morgan

Michelle Morgan joined the University of Worcester School of Sport and Exercise Science full-time in 2011, after fulfilling a number of part-time roles within the School during both her undergraduate and MSc studies. Michelle has a range of experiences in sports coaching (both in the UK and USA) with a Netball specialism as a UKCC Level 3 coach. In her role as a Senior Lecturer for the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching Science degree, Michelle uses her industry and academic experiences to support and develop students’ understanding of the demands of the sporting industry, including the skills and qualities needed to be employable.

Mandy Newbold

Mandy joined the University in 2011 following 20 years’ work within the sport development industry. As an enthusiast for physical activity, sport and getting people active, Mandy works part-time as a Senior Lecturer supporting the Sport Development and Sport Business Management modules, as well as being a Senior Tutor for the Youth Sport Trust Learning Academy.  This has enabled some excellent community development projects to be established by students, including the Pitchcroft Parkrun in Worcester which has been running since 2017.

Gill Renfree

Gill Renfree

Gill has been working at the University of Worcester since 2012 and teaches across a range of modules from sport business professional placement to event project management as well as mentoring students undertaking sandwich years in the sport industry and supervising research projects. Gill also teaches in modules related to her research interests such as sports tourism, event management and sports marketing. Gill has extensive experience of working on collaborative projects and continues to research in areas related to Generation Z, gender equity in sport as well as sport governance, leadership, and volunteering.

David Mycock

David Mycock

David consults and researches in the field of coaching science and coaches externally in elite level football. He has helped evolve the game of blind futsal and is a qualified FA Tutor. David is the Head Coach of Worcester Blind FC and has previously coached the England and Great Britain Blind Futsal teams at major tournaments, and is currently the Head Coach of the Czech Republic National Blind Football team.

David has a variety of NGB Awards and as an ex-professional football player is a member of the Professional Footballers Association. His role at the University has grown since 2006 and he is now the Link Tutor for the SSES Partnership programmes with Masaryk University in the Czech Republic.

2021/22 Indoor Cricket season review

The University indoor cricket season 2021/22 culminated in the National finals at Edgbaston.

Following a series of qualifying tournaments, in which the University of Worcester Men's Indoor Cricket Team won 7 matches, they successfully qualified for the national finals.

Although, the team eventually lost in a tight semi-final match, Head Coach, Alfie Marsden, was pleased with their efforts across the season. "The team have made tremendous progress since returning in the autumn term and we are in a fantastic place as we now turn our attention to the outdoor season," said Alfie.

Fees and funding

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard fee for full-time home and EU undergraduate students enrolling on BA/BSc/LLB degrees and FdA/FdSc degrees in the 2024/25 academic year is £9,250 per year.

Additional costs

Every course has day-to-day costs for printing, stationery, books and photocopying.Students on the integrated master’s program will be expected to be in School of Sport & Exercise kit for practical sessions.

There will be placements which may incur travel expenses and there will be additional excursions that are not mandatory for the course that you may wish to partake in to consolidate and enhance your learning.
