What makes training to teach at Worcester special?

- Specialise in either 3-7 years or 5-11 years
What qualifications will you need?
UCAS tariff points
A minimum of 120 UCAS Tariff points from a maximum of 3 ½ A Levels (or equivalent Level 3 qualifications). Plus at least 6 GCSEs at Grades A-C, including Maths, English Language and Science
Post-16 qualifications should, for preference, have some National Curriculum relevance. It may be beneficial if qualifications reflected the likely choice of curriculum focus, for example, A Level Science.
If you have lived overseas for three months or more in the last five years a Certificate of Good Conduct from the country of residence will be required. Further information and guidance associated with additional costs are available at the Home Office website.
You will also be subject to the usual prohibition list and criminal record checks.
Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed. The NCTL requires all trainee teachers, prior to starting the course, to satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire to demonstrate their fitness to teach, to obtain a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Candidates will be expected to have had some recent experience in a primary school setting and to include this as part of the supporting statement in their application. Currently candidates, as a condition of entry, provide a report from a primary school head teacher where they have completed a minimum of two weeks’ work experience (or the part-time equivalent).
Non-Standard Entrance Mature students undertaking an Access course will need to demonstrate subject knowledge in a National Curriculum area. These students will be asked to pass the Access to Higher Education Diploma with a minimum of 45 credits at level 3, of which at least 25 should be at merit or distinction. If candidates require further information about appropriate study they may request advice.

All applicants for teacher training courses need to take the numeracy and literacy professional skills tests as part of the application process. You will need to ensure you have passed them both before the start of the course.
The first attempt at taking your skills tests in each subject is provided free of charge. You can book up to two resits if required, but you will be expected to pay for this yourself. The pass mark depends on the difficulty of the test. Please note that after your third attempt you cannot retake for 24 months. Once you have passed the skills tests they are valid for three years from the date passed.
You must take the tests after you have applied and you will need to provide evidence of your application when you attend the test centre. When you take the tests you will need to provide proof that you have applied for a teacher training course. At interview we will ask you to provide proof that you have booked the skills tests.
If you are made an offer after interview part of your conditions will be to pass the tests and a time frame will be indicated. We do however advise that you try and take the tests before your interview date, or as soon after your interview as possible, as this will enable us to make a firm offer.

Worcester shortlisted for Outstanding Support for Students award
The Times Higher Education Awards 2015 recognise talent, dedication and innovation in higher education. The winners of which will be announced in November.
The University has been shortlisted for its Working in Partnership (WiP) scheme, which was launched in September 2013 and involved giving undergraduates on Primary Initial Teacher Training course a prominent voice in the governance of their course.
Students set up three working parties and produced action plans with measurable targets and timelines, which included designing a text message system to alert students to timetable changes, instigating mid-point evaluations to address students’ desire for more on-going feedback, and re-timetabling some lectures on the same day to reduce students’ travel time.

How will you be taught?
You will learn:
- creativity, commitment and enthusiasm for innovative classroom practice, together with the knowledge, intellectual and managerial skills required of the graduate professional in ensuring the well-being and educational development of all learners;
- intellectual and innovative capability, critical judgement and skilled communication that can be employed in the workplace;
- ability to pursue specialist knowledge and understanding;
- capacity to support and contribute to the policies and practices of the workplace and to share in the collective responsibility for their implementation;
- commitment to reflect on and improve professional practice and take increasing responsibility or identifying and meeting their own continuing professional development (CPD) needs;
- understanding of relevant educational issues and theories and the ability to apply these in the workplace; ability to meet the Government Teachers’ Standards.
- Tutor-led workshops, lectures and fieldwork, primarily to introduce underpinning knowledge, theoretical argument, practical skills, central issues, key texts and inter-professional fields of study;
- study of key texts and supplementary reading to enable students to identify subject matter that will enhance their understanding and intellectual ability;
- participation in group discussion, presentation and debate, to encourage students to develop their skills of critical analysis and further increase involvement and collaboration in order to improve their interpersonal, group and communication skills;
- case studies and problem solving tasks to provide opportunities to develop approaches that will deepen levels of understanding and professional judgement, including multi-agency approaches;
- development of practice-based competence and skills of critical reflection through guided individual mentoring during placements.
- Various assessment methods, including the use of a profile of teaching competences and coursework closely linked with school experience.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to meet the DfE Professional Standards for Teachers (2014).
Where could it take you?
Our Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) have one of the highest employment rates of all graduates. There are excellent employment opportunities and good promotion prospects alongside job security. At the end of the course you will be advised about suitable in-service courses to follow in your teaching career, as part of your continuing professional development.
You will be invited to enrol on the Masters programme after your successful completion of the BA (Hons).
ESCalate Student Conference 2011 Employability and Enterprise – Worcester student, Megan David, was successfully awarded a nationally recognised bursary to attend and report back to students on the ESCalate website.
University of Worcester Newly Qualified Teachers have been awarded ‘NQTs of the Year 2104-15’ in the City of Wolverhampton for their dedication and enthusiasm to the teaching profession. Congratulations to both of our graduates, Heather Proudler and Stephanie Wignall.
Rebecca, who was involved in a serious car accident during her second year of study, overcame the odds to graduate with a First Class Honours in Primary Initial Teacher Education in 2016.
“As much as I might not like to admit it, the accident certainly impacted on me emotionally and physically,” she said. “I seriously considered not going back to university because I was suffering with severe anxiety and panic attacks as a result of the trauma.”
Having decided to take the brave step of returning to her studies at Worcester, Rebecca found her degree to be an ideal antidote to the nightmare of the accident.
“Being in school on placement was a brilliant and enjoyable experience that distracted me from what had happened,” she said. “I enjoyed it so much that I finished the placement with a rating of ‘outstanding’, and the offer of a permanent job in the school.
“I cannot thank my tutors enough for their support throughout this process, academically and personally. I could not have got through it without them.”
For most people, simply completing a degree under such circumstances would be challenging enough, but for Rebecca, only excellence would suffice: “I’m absolutely delighted - and a bit shocked to be honest - to have come through it all with First Class Honours.”
Quality of the reflective students who can see a clear link between theory and practice in developing their practice is to be commended. This is due to the high quality and highly relevant content of the course.

How much will it cost?
Full-time tuition fees

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in 2017 will be no more than £9,250, subject to approval by Parliament.
