Journalism at the University of Worcester

At Worcester we offer you the opportunity of becoming multi-skilled to meet the needs of today’s media environment.

The department has strong links with industry. These include a Media Diversity Partnership with the BBC with students regularly on placements at the local radio station nearby. Through a partnership with the city’s community radio station, 106.7fm Youthcomm, many students work as volunteers, honing their news gathering and presenting skills. Listen live to Youthcomm. TheWorcester News, also nearby, also provides work experience opportunities for journalism students.

The journalism department is also working towards industry accreditation with the Broadcast Journalism Training Council. A panel of industry experts will be coming to view students in action on April 23 2012.

The course provides grounding in journalism theory and practice and, through a hands-on approach, will introduce you to the concept of multi-platform delivery.

There is also scope for you to develop special skills as you move into Years 2 and 3, with a range of pathways including broadcast, photography and politics.

A wide range of module options will enable you to create your own distinct programme with topics including sport, feature writing and TV researcher skills. Some modules engage with current debates on the power and responsibility of the media. There are opportunities to study abroad for one semester.

You will be taught by industry experts and learn essential and up-to-date techniques that will make you more attractive to prospective employers. There are excellent work placement opportunities in collaboration with local organisations.

High profile speakers include Heather Brooke, the journalist who set the ball rolling on the MPs’ expenses scandal.

It is also possible to study Journalism as a joint degree with another subject.

The combination subjects available are: Creative Digital Media, English Language Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, Politics: People and Power, Sports Coaching Science, Sports Studies.
