What makes Computing at Worcester special?

This is a hands-on, highly flexible course. You can choose to study a broad range of computing disciplines and tailor your degree to suit your interests as they develop, with specialist modules available in web design, programming, information systems, systems analysis, computer science, cybersecurity, mobile application development, networking, database management, social media, e-business, drone technology, cloud computing and games development.

You will also have the opportunity to work on live client projects through our Media Lab (our student-led software consultancy), develop your leadership and management skills, undertake paid cutting-edge research / teaching projects, start up your own business through the Business School’s Incubator or get talent spotted through our annual Computing Showcase.

  • The course has been designed in consultation with employers, aligned with industry standards (ACM, BCS, IEEE), and taught by experienced computing professionals.
  • 24/7 access to excellent IT facilities, including dedicated PC and mac labs featuring industry-standard software.
  • Option to take a 1-year paid placement, engage in client-based consultancy projects, develop software for clients through the Business School’s Media Lab, or ‘earn as you learn’ by setting up as a freelancer.

How will you be taught?

You will learn how to

Develop and sharpen key employability skills such as:

All of these skills are achieved through a rigorous curriculum designed and taught by experts working closely with industry partners. Modules make use of the latest technology and advancements and are taught by highly experienced academics with backgrounds in applied industry and research.

Teaching Approach

Worcester is a place where you will be able to reach your full potential as a self-directed learner supported by staff renowned for their friendly, approachable and accessible nature. You will progressively develop your expertise, skills and knowledge through a practice of enquiry based learning, leading to a portfolio of work that will demonstrate your technical and creative achievements addressing relevant and contemporary challenges in the Computing discipline.

The course offers a variety of module options and assessment patterns which will enable you to tailor your learning to fit your career aspirations and personal interests. With strong industry links we also provide ample opportunities for you to engage in work-based learning through real-world projects and placements.

The learning environment is supported by the up to date facilities including four on-site computing labs and a high quality wireless network.

My work placement gave me the opportunity to work on many projects that are currently live and being used by thousands of customers daily.

  • Oran Devilly

    Oran is an award winning lecturer. With a decade of teaching experience focused on programming and game design he has taught students who have gone on to be freelance level designers, game programmers and even entrepreneurs in game development. He has formed academic agreements with some of the biggest game companies in the world and worked along-side industry experts throughout his career.

  • Dr Chris Bowers

    Chris has 11 years experience of teaching and scholarship in the area of Intelligent Interactive Systems.  With a particular focus on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems, Chris has worked on a number of successful international projects across the engineering, media, culture and heritage sectors.

    Case study

    Gino Cubeddu work-placement at IBM

    Gino was delighted to obtain a full-year work-placement offer from IBM.

    Prior to coming to Worcester, Gino completed a BTEC in Information Technology. Since studying for his BSc (Hons) degree at the University of Worcester, Gino’s academic achievements have been top-notch, becoming one of the University Academic Award winners for Computing in October 2016. According to his lecturer in web design and development “Gino’s development of the CSS and HTML has gone beyond the limits of the tasks taught; he has been able to offer a much- extended interpretation”.

    Gino’s high scores and excellent interview really impressed IBM, where he will be trained to usePython - a high-tech language that will be new to Gino and add to his skillset and future employability.

    Gino came to university with no knowledge of object-oriented programming knowledge or concepts. He feels the excellent teaching and experiences in multiple modules has helped him go above his expectations in achieving a prestigious Computing placement.

How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard annual fee for full-time UK and EU students enrolling in 2016 is £9,000 per year.

The standard annual fee for full-time UK and EU students enrolling in 2017 will be no more than £9,250, subject to approval by Parliament.

Part-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard fees for part-time UK and EU students enrolling on this course in 2016 are £1,125 per 15-credit module, £1,500 per 20 credit module and £2,250 per 30-credit module.

The standard fees for part-time UK and EU students enrolling on this course in 2017 will be no more than £1,156 per 15-credit module, £1,542 per 20 credit module and £2,313 per 30-credit module, subject to approval by Parliament.

Accommodation

Finding the right accommodation is paramount to your university experience, and our welcoming student communities are great places to live and study.

We have over 1,000 rooms across our halls, 358 of which were new in 2009. We offer halls of residence to suit every budget and need, from our 'Traditional Hall' at £91 per week to the £149 per week 'En-suite Extra'.
