Graduation ceremonies FAQs

When is graduation taking place for the Class of 2021?

In-person Graduation Ceremonies for the Class of 2021 will be taking place during the week commencing 1 November 2021, with three ceremonies each day from Tuesday to Friday (2-5 November).

You should have received an email with the time and date of your specific ceremony.

If you have not received an email, but believe that you should be graduating, please contact us on

Where are the ceremonies taking place?

The ceremonies will be held at the magnificent Worcester Cathedral.

You will collect your robes and have the opportunity for a professional photograph at the University’s City Campus.

Graduates and Guests will the travel between the City Campus and the Cathedral by foot (a distance of 0.8 miles). Detailed guidance on the suggested walking route and walking times will be published shortly. Car park locations will also be published in advance, for those who need to or prefer to travel by car.

Following the ceremony, all graduates, their ticketed guests and University staff are invited to return to the City Campus for a reception, where light refreshments will be served. You will also have further opportunities to take photographs against the beautiful backdrop of the historic Charles Hastings building.

Do I have to attend my ceremony?

Passing the required examinations and assessments is actually what turns a student into a graduate- this means you are not required to attend the ceremonies. The ceremonies are simply an opportunity to celebrate your achievement with your classmates, academic staff and guests.

You will be able to access a copy of your final module grades and a letter confirming whether you have achieved your qualification on your SOLE page.

My particular ceremony date is inconvenient. Is it possible to swap to another ceremony?

It is not possible to change a ceremony date. If you cannot attend on your ceremony day, you are very welcome to watch remotely through the live, online broadcast (see below).

I am not sure I can attend. Can I watch my ceremony remotely?

All ceremonies will be broadcast live through an online stream, which will be linked from this webpage. There is no cost to watch the broadcast and you can share the link with family and friends. If you can’t watch the ceremony live, recordings will be available to view afterwards for one month.

What will the ceremonies involve?

The celebrations will include all of the traditional features of our graduation ceremonies, including academic dress, photography and speeches. Most importantly, they will provide an opportunity to come together as a community and to reunite after such a difficult year.

Each graduate will be called on to the stage individually, with their fellow classmates, guests and staff watching and applauding.

How long is each ceremony?

Each ceremony will last between 1 to 1.5 hours.

Do you have any recommendations or special rates for accommodation?

Our Accommodation Team have reserved a small number of rooms in our on-campus Halls of Residence for Graduates and their guests.

Flats will be available at a special rate, along with a food and drink options.

When will I receive my tickets?

You will receive electronic information in advance of your ceremony, which confirms your attendance and also important details (such as your seat number in the Cathedral). This email will be sent to your preferred contact address (as indicated on SOLE so please make sure this is up to date). You will need to present this electronic confirmation on a mobile when you arrive to collect your gown at the City Campus.

If you do not have a mobile device, you can print out the information and bring a hardcopy with you on the day.

Once you have checked in at City Campus, paper tickets will be issued to you and your guests. These tickets will give you access to the ceremony and the reception.

I booked tickets, but I’ve changed my mind. Can I get a refund?

You are able to request a refund up to the Friday before Graduation (29 October). Refunds will not be available after this date.

What happens if there is another national lockdown due to Covid-19? Can I get a refund?

The situation with the pandemic is still unpredictable and as we write there are national social distancing restrictions or predictions for further national lockdowns. However, if the situation changes and a lockdown is imposed, which means Graduation cannot take place, please rest assured that you will receive a full refund on your tickets.

We don’t want you to experience any further disappointments if they can be avoided, so we have been working on plans for celebrations that will allow for the greatest level of flexibility and insure against any potential restrictions as much as possible. If new guidelines are implemented, we have options for alternative venues (including outdoor spaces) so that you will be able to attend a ceremony.

Please be assured that arrangements for the event will adhere to any guidelines in place at the time.
