This degree has been developed by entrepreneurs to support your entrepreneurial journey, and to develop the entrepreneur within you alongside an in-depth understanding of how to start and run your own business.

You will be in class with like-minded students developing a strong network of entrepreneurs. Your focus will progressively move from entrepreneurial mindset, creativity, venture feasibility and marketing, to business operations, stakeholder communications, sales and growth strategies.

Active and serial entrepreneurs (including one featured on Dragon’s Den), start-up specialists and private equity professionals will teach you and you will have access to our Business Incubator, Entrepreneurs-in-Residence network, ‘Worcesterpreneur’ events, in-house Media Lab and enterprise ecosystem.

Teaching and Assessment

How will you be taught?

Teaching and Learning

The University places emphasis on enabling you to develop the independent learning capabilities that will equip you for lifelong learning and a successful future as an entrepreneur. A mixture of independent study, teaching, learning by doing and the personal academic tutoring enables you to reflect on progress and build up a profile of skills, achievements and experiences that will enable you to flourish and be an awesome entrepreneur.


All Worcester Business School courses and modules have been mapped to take advantage of professional body accreditations. The modules on this course are accredited by the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs (IOEE).


You are taught through a combination of interactive lectures, seminars and individual/ small group project work with a strong emphasis on real-world scenarios and practical applications. The Work Based Learning approach enables you to access entrepreneur-enhancing expertise, or even to try out different opportunities for your future business interests. In addition, 1-2-1 meetings with personal academic tutors will take place on a monthly basis and on an individual needs basis in the final year of the course.

Contact time

In a typical week you will have at least 6 hours of timetabled teaching in lectures, seminars and small-group work. However this is supplemented by additional programmed learning opportunities.

The Business Incubator provided for the duration of the course, including a open working area, postal address and meeting rooms develop your understanding of a entrepreneurial co-working environment. All students will be offered at least one Mentor to support their growth with planned monthly sessions. A weekly Business Clinic is conducted to support you and your business ideas with a mixture of Entrepreneurs in Residence attending. Additional sessions are provided to develop your individual understanding of IP, Tax, Funding and bookkeeping strategies. We also provide access to a range of Networking Events to help you develop your own network and business throughout the course.

Independent self-study

In addition to the contact time, you are expected to undertake around 23 hours of personal self-study per week.  Typically, this will involve meeting with individual tutors to discuss progress and feedback, completing online activities, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library and online, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations.

Independent learning is supported by a range of excellent learning facilities, including the Hive and library resources, the virtual learning environment, and extensive electronic learning resources as well as our network of employers and entrepreneurs. 


There are no exams in this course. The precise assessment requirements in an academic year will vary according to the mandatory and optional modules taken by you, but we recognise that you like to know in advance how you will be assessed. With this in mind our assessment and feedback strategy has been designed so that: 

  • all modules have both formative and summative assessment elements. Formative assessment allows tutors and you as students to recognise strengths and weaknesses in learning and to address those issues immediately. Summative assessments are graded and count towards the overall module grade by evaluating your learning in a module or a component of a module and comparing it with a standard or benchmark;
  • typically 15 credit/ one semester modules will have one assessment item; 30 credit/ two semester modules will have 2-3 assessments;
  • across each individual year and cumulatively across all three years the concept of continuous assessment and/or building up expertise in different assessment types applies. This means a variety of assessments (such as reports, portfolios, presentations, essays and a final year research or consultancy project) will be encountered by you to suit different learning styles;
  • we develop your business development skills by means of, for example, report writing, presentations, and the development of self-awareness and a critical reflection journal which runs throughout the degree.


You will receive feedback on all assessments.

Feedback is intended to support learning by indicating how you can improve in future assignments and you are encouraged to discuss it with personal academic tutors and module tutors to help support your development. We always place you the student at the centre of the learning experience: for example, your written feedback will provide evidence of how you are enhancing your essential academic and employability skills.

Feedback on formal course work assessments is normally provided within 20 working days of hand-in.

    Crowdfunding business idea

    Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or business venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, the crowd. We use this practice in groups to develop start-up marketing campaigns and get the class to select on the best campaign, as highlighted in this Time Higher Education Magazine article.

  • Technique

    Flipped classroom

    The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed. Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. This helps ensure we are working on your business idea “on task” as much as possible.

    Local global businesses provide our case studies

    The case studies we use are businesses we know, in fact they are local to Worcestershire or our partner universities.

    These case studies all have video elements and written case studies, which support the way you learn about the business, the business theory and the practical steps that business has taken to grow and sustain itself.

    In fact you will probably meet the business owners during your stay with us. It’s that connected.

    Simventure - authentic business simulations

    SimVenture, the multi-award winning business simulation which makes a powerful difference in the learning experience. It allows us to engage with you the student with in a deeper, richer learning experience and develop lasting business, enterprise and entrepreneurial talent.

    The simulation game lets you run your own virtual company and learn about entrepreneurship & business in an authentic, engaging and sustainable way. Within the four key business areas (Organisation; Sales & Marketing; Finance; and Operations) any number of decisions can be made each month. The challenge is to generate enquiries, sales and orders and build a successful company.

    Since graduating in 1996 Jo has worked for large organisations such as Thames Water, Financial Services Authority and Eversheds Legal services in a variety of roles within IT Departments such as IT Project Manager, IT Relationship Manager and Programme Office Manager.  In 2008 after relocating back to Worcestershire, Jo completed a Diploma in Education and Training and delivered lecturing in Business, Computing and Enterprise at various colleges.  Jo left Evesham College in October 2016, where she was Assistant Director of Curriculum to work on her own business projects. Alongside her day job Jo has set up and run two businesses. Jo joined the University of Worcester in 2016 and is a Course Lead, Lecturer and runs a summer course to support individuals starting their own business.

    Chris Boulton

    Chris is an independent venture capital and private equity professional with 20 years of investment and fund management experience. As an investor and shareholder he has been involved in a variety of business situations from start-ups, growth, family succession, management buyouts, to company sale, listing and rescue across a wide range of sectors in the UK, Japan, and South East Asia.

    A seasoned operator at Board level, Chris has direct experience of guiding management through various challenges including management change, innovation, acquisition, joint ventures, overseas expansion (and contraction!), litigation, fundraising, and divestment. He has recently relocated from South East Asia where he was also an occasional lecturer on MBA courses at INSEAD’s Asian Campus as well as adviser to the Singapore Government on entrepreneurship and SME financing matters.

    Nigel Walton

    Nigel has had a long association with the Business School, combining his tutoring and consultancy with work for The Open University and other international organizations. He is responsible for the management and delivery of an enterprise programme, funded by the HE Funding Council, and aimed at Undergraduate students who aspire to running their own business on Graduation.

    He has also contributed to the University’s Enterprise Fellowship Scheme which supports high achieving Undergraduates to further develop their enterprise ideas. Nigel has completed a number of Innovation Voucher consultancies with SMEs on behalf of the University, and has broad experience of e-tutoring and supporting group activity remotely both with Worcester and the Open University.

    Dr David Bozward

    David is a serial technology entrepreneur, educator, mentor and authority on international youth entrepreneurship and education with over 20 years entrepreneurial business experience. He uses this in inspiring students across numerous disciplines with thought provoking, insightful and instantly usable techniques. David stimulates students to understand the implementation of entrepreneurship forging together theory and practice into the learning outcome.

How much will it cost?

Full-time tuition fees

UK and EU students

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in the academic year 2018/19 will be £9,250 per year.

The standard tuition fees for part-time UK and EU students registering on this course in the academic year 2018/19 will be £1,156 per 15-credit module, £1,542 per 20 credit module and £2,313 per 30-credit module.

Additional costs

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying.  The amounts vary between courses.

If you decide to take up the optional placement year accommodation and travel costs may be incurred dependent on location of placement. As placements are paid by the employer at minimum wage plus these costs can be covered by the student’s wage. During this year you will pay 10% of normal academic fees to the University. You are provided with a placement tutor, and have access to the advice of the full placement team, as well as all University student support and services.

There are also occasional trips which may require you to incur travel costs.

There will be a charge for membership of the professional bodies
