Yonghyun Yun joined the course as a mature student from South Korea. Before this, Yonghyun studied broadcasting theory for his Bachelors degree and a Masters in Film Theory in South Korea whilst working in the broadcasting industry as a professional camera operator and music video director. His practice led him to realise the potential of media format development and decided to study in the UK in order to further his investigative studies. Consequently, he joined the BA course in Interactive Media at the University of Gloucestershire.
On graduation, Yonghyun chose the Creative Digital Media MA course here at Worcester because it offered him excellent support and the potential to build his confidence through the course programme. As a result, he feels that the course developed his abilities and subject skills, and also presented opportunities to broaden his potential practice. This has led to him developing an ambitious career strategy in the media industries on graduation.
Yonghyun’s research is based on the potential of media formats in the future, especially in a rapidly changing technological environment. His work is focused on predicting new types of media that present challenges to designers and filmmakers and which also offer new opportunities in communication interfaces. His work on the course examined the evolution of the curved screen display, an interface that offers a more immersive viewer environment and which can incorporate a wide variety of information within the format. The sense of a friendly community was a factor of the course that Yonghyun found invaluable, especially the opportunities for shared views and mutual support, not only within the study group but also with tutors, both in the sessions and outside.
Aware of the restrictions that professional media practice can impose on creative potential, Yonghyun appreciated the influence of the course in broadening his thinking and approach to finding inventive solutions to problems posed by his research. He feels that the experience of the MA has changed him greatly as an individual. He says, “The tutors were a huge help to me. In developing my study, they gave me good advice and offered new ways of communication that had a beneficial effect on my practice.”
Yonghyun feels that the choice of the right university in which to study for a Masters is a crucial one and the University of Worcester offered him the support and programme that he needed in order to realise his potential.
