Katy Small graduates from the University of Worcester today with a degree in History and Sociology.
Katy joined the University after taking two years out of education, following the completion of her A-levels at Christopher Whitehead Language College and Sixth Form in Worcester.
The 23-year-old said: “I feel immensely proud to have completed my degree despite the challenges of the pandemic and am excited to start a new phase of my education and life that graduating will open the door to.
“After taking two years out of education after A-Levels I had developed a firm idea of the subjects and topics that interested me; the History and Sociology course at Worcester and the modules it entailed were exactly what I was looking for. Having experienced The Hive and other University facilities whilst growing up in Worcester, as well as seeing the University grow over the years, I knew the University could offer me what I wanted from an educational institution.”
In her first year of study, Katy was one of the two winners of the Stanford History Group Prize for Best Performance by a First Year Student in History and received a University of Worcester Scholarship in recognition of outstanding academic results.
“My time at the University was engaging and inspiring; it allowed me to decide what I hope to do for a career and to develop as an individual both academically and personally,” she said. “The support from tutors and staff was great, especially big thanks to the Sociology staff who often went above and beyond.”
Katy is now about to start a part-time MRes in Sociology, focussing on the creation of an ideological ‘Other’ using language within 21st Century US political discourse. “I very much hope to continue this research into a PhD and continue my academic career into further research and teaching,” she said.
