photo of undergraduate studentsStudying at degree, HND or foundation degree level can be both exciting and challenging. Whether you have been out of education for a while or have just completed ‘A’ levels, an Access course or have relevant work experience, the resources on this page (and throughout the study skills website) are intended to aid your development of effective study skills.

Assignment Format
Many students are unsure of the exact format (font type and size, line spacing and referencing system etc) of their assignments. Each department/course usually have their own guidelines, these can be found in your course handbook – available from your Sole page. If you are still unsure about anything after reading the relevant handbook, check with your module tutor.

Assessment Criteria
The assessment criteria document gives details of the underlying criteria for your assessed work, enabling you to identify what is required to achieve a specific grade in your assignments. The guidelines are generic and a bit heavy going, because the language has to be both precise and technical in terms of seeking to define grades but also broad and general enough in order to be applied across a wide range of different subjects. However, it is worth spending some time reading the document in order to gain an understanding of how your assessed work is graded.
