TRANSPARENT APPROACH TO COSTING

With effect from 1999, all UK higher education institutions have been required to participate in an exercise known as Transparent Approach to Costing (TRAC).  Broadly speaking TRAC requires UW to make an annual return to HEFCE indicating how much academic staff time has been spent on specific activities.  These activities are:

  • Teaching (funded from public funds)
  • Teaching (funded from non public funds)
  • Research (funded from public funds)
  • Research (funded from non public funds)
  • Other Activities.

UW has adopted a consistent approach to the collection of TRAC data; all TRAC surveys are based on four months each year on a 3-year cycle. For each survey, 33% of academic staff across all departments provides the survey sample.

If you are selected, you are required to make a return for each week of the survey period.

The method for making your returns will be the web-based TRAC form. This will be made available to you on your personalised staff web page (staff intranet) within ‘Your Online Services’, along with all the supporting information and guidance notes to assist you in completing your weekly returns.
