Apprenticeship Scheme

Apprenticeship Scheme

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeships is an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience. As an employee, you can earn as you learn and you gain practical skills from the workplace.

Who are they for?

Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16 years old - whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a new career.   You need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education.

How do I apply?

Any apprenticeships will be advertised on our staff vacancies section on the university’s home page: www.worcester.ac.uk

Does it cost anything to become an apprentice?

While you are on an apprenticeship, your employer pays you a salary and supports you whilst you undertake your training. Most of the training is ‘on the job’ within the workplace however the rest can be provided by a local college or by a specialist learning provider, or in some cases it could all be undertaken by your employer.

Do I get paid?

Yes, all employed apprentices will get a wage.  The salary for the apprenticeship will be shown on the job description.

The new National Minimum Wage (NMW) came into force on 1 October 2010 where all apprentices are paid a minimum of £2.60 per hour.   The new apprentice NMW applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

Do I get holidays?

You will be receive 20 days’ paid holiday per year as well as public holidays and 4 days when the university is closed.

How long does it take?

The length of an apprenticeship varies depending on your current skills and the qualification that you take as part of the apprenticeship.  At the university the apprenticeships we have offered so far have been for up to two years.
