Worcestershire Professional Qualification for Teaching Assistants
This qualification is validated through the University of Worcester and is one of several ways of receiving recognised qualified Teaching Assistant status within this authority.
The modules within this qualification reflect the National Occupational Standards for Teaching Assistants and are delivered at Higher Education levels 4 and 5 (previously referred to as levels 1 and 2). These modules are advertised to schools in a booklet entitled 'Professional Development for Teaching Assistants'.
This booklet is prepared termly by the local authority Teaching Assistant Training and Development Coordinator and contains details of the courses, costs and how to book. These courses may also be undertaken without completing the accreditation at the end.

Study options
The credit points received for the modules may be used to move forward in terms of a higher qualification should you wish, for example, to complete the first year of a Foundation degree in Learning Support.

Modules
The Worcestershire Professional Qualification for Teaching Assistants can be achieved by completing any three modules from the following portfolio:
An introduction to Special Educational Needs
Working with pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties
Supporting pupils with literacy difficulties
Supporting pupils with numeracy difficulties
Managing the behaviour and learning of pupils with emotional, behavioural and social disorders
Working with children who are deaf, blind, multi-sensorily impaired
Talking and listening with pupils - developing a counselling approach Reducing disaffection - increasing motivation
Supporting children for whom English is an additional language
Language and learning (double module)
Working with pupils with physical disabilities/serious medical conditions
Working with children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Reflecting on Action (which covers the DfES Induction Training for Teaching Assistants)
ICT and Study Skills for Teaching Assistants
Assessment
To obtain the qualification you need to complete any three of the modules listed in the Modules section.
