Overseas Trained Teacher Programme

This programme is designed to provide a fast route to gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Those applying for the course must have been teaching in England for a minimum of 26 weeks.

Before applying for the OTTP you must be working in a school, ideally within the Worcester Partnership.

The QTS Standards require trainees to have experience in at least two schools before being assessed for QTS. If you have only taught in one school in England, you will need to provide evidence of relevant experience in another country.

Once you have been accepted an initial meeting will take place either in the school or at the University. At this meeting decisions will be made about the type and length of training. There are two routes available. The first is an assessment only route. The second is a training route (maximum of 12 weeks). If the training route is chosen a training plan is written for the trainee to follow. The training route chosen will be based on evidence provided by the trainee against the QTS Standards.

Original certificates and CRB form will be required before beginning the programme. All qualifications will be checked by NARIC for UK equivalence.

Please note that we are only able to support secondary overseas trained teachers.

GCSE English and Maths grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications, with certification from NARIC if these qualifications were obtained outside the UK, and translation of the original certificates if appropriate.

A degree in the subject that you wish to teach, with certification from NARIC that it is equivalent to a UK degree if you obtained it outside the UK, and translation of the original degree certificate if appropriate.

A teaching qualification (with a teaching license or registration document if appropriate) that is recognised in the UK and that is relevant to the age group you are seeking QTS for.

A minimum of 26 weeks full time / 52 weeks part time experience (but no more than four years) teaching the National Curriculum in the UK as an unqualified teacher prior to applying for the course. This must be a continuous period of service in one school.

Experience of teaching the National Curriculum in at least two schools, over two consecutive key stages, and we will require references to confirm this.

You must already be working in a school in the Worcestershire area as an unqualified teacher and have the relevant permission to work in the UK prior to applying for the course. This should be in a mainstream school. Please note that if you are currently working in an independent or a special school, your school must agree to release you so that you can acquire the appropriate amount of mainstream experience.

We are not able to work with Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), and cannot work with overseas trained teachers on a casual supply list.
