Mentoring and Coaching for Leadership in Education MA/PGCert
The MA/PGCert in Mentoring and Coaching is designed for teachers and leaders from a wide range of organisations, who work with their colleagues as coaches, mentors or induction tutors.
You will explore and develop the complex skills and qualities needed for effective mentoring and coaching.
The programme is designed to allow you time to review the theory of coaching as a model for school or organisational improvement, offering you the opportunity to practise coaching skills and plan for the integration of coaching into structured professional development in your workplace.
Completing the full MA award will broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding, through a shared reflective approach to professional learning. The course aligns with the National Framework for Mentoring and Coaching developed by CUREE.
Course leader, Shaun Hughes, is a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council. The University of Worcester has an association with the Institute of Educational Coaching.
The MA/PG Cert is designed for teachers and leaders from a wide range of organisations, who work with their colleagues as coaches, mentors or induction tutors. It is an ideal professional learning opportunity for Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) coaches.
Accreditation of prior learning is available for those who have acquired Masters level credits through previous study. We can offer the course tailored specifically to the needs of your

Modules
Mentoring and Coaching (MEDD4064)
This develops your knowledge and understanding of the current context and principles underpinning mentoring and coaching. It seeks to develop the interpersonal, practical and managerial skills of the coach or mentor, as well as an understanding of appropriate ethical practice.
Performance Management (MEDD4024)
This deals with the challenges of effectively motivating and improving the performance of people in organisations.
Negotiated Learning (MEDD4007)
This is a small-scale, practice-based investigation into an aspect of supporting professional development, which is relevant to your role and context.
Progression to MA:
The Practice of Mentoring and Coaching (MEDD4067)
This explores and critiques key ideas in theory and practice in relation to the development of personal skills.
Approaches to Educational Research (MEDD4001)
This looks at the issues concerning the planning, processes and procedures required to carry out an extended enquiry or dissertation through educational research. The module is a compulsory element for all Masters students. Students may choose to take it at any point in their study programme. It is taught twice yearly at the University of Worcester campus in the autumn and spring terms. A distance learning option is available in each academic term .
Assessment
All modules are supported through taught sessions and are assessed through a 3,000 word assignment.
Progression routes
If you complete the first three modules you will be awarded a PG Cert in Mentoring and Coaching. This award, worth 60 level 7 credits, can be accrued towards a Masters degree at the University of Worcester or elsewhere. Participants who continue their studies may progress to achieve a full MA in Mentoring and Coaching in Education.
