Monday, 11 May 2009
A student at the University of Worcester is flying to America to take part in an event celebrating the centenary of the Girl Guide movement.
Jayne Power, 44, who is in the first year of a Youth and Communities Services degree, was chosen to lead a group of 30 Girl Guides from all over the UK at the event, which takes place in New York City in December.
She said: “It is a real privilege to lead the one of the first international opportunities to celebrate the Centenary. This is will be a fantastic experience for the young women participants. Arranging the trip of a lifetime, visiting all of the city’s cultural and historic landmarks and attractions including the Headquarters of the Girl Scouts of America, United Nations and Ground Zero will also be excellent for my own professional development.”
Mrs Power, who also works with disaffected and vulnerable students at Hanley Castle High School in Upton-upon-Severn, was awarded £250 towards the cost of the trip by the University’s Scholarship Panel.
She added: “I hope to combine my degree course and my work at the High School with the voluntary work I do for the Guides.”
Mrs Power has been involved with the Girl Guides for over 10 years and leads the 14-25 year-old senior section of the Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn Guides.
The Girl Guide movement was founded by Robert Baden-Powell in 1910 and currently boasts 10 million members in 144 countries worldwide.
It is estimated that half of all females in the UK are involved with the Girl Guides at some point in their lives.
The University of Worcester’s Scholarship Panel has awarded £19,500 to 40 students this academic year, which is the second year of the Scholarship Scheme.
In 2007/08 £12,000 was awarded to 17 students. Students can apply to the scheme at two points in the year (1st December and 1st March) for up to £1,000 towards voluntary work or activities, to pursue a particular interest, i.e. music or arts, or towards course-related activities.
