University Academics' Book Explores Inclusion in Education

Education experts at the University of Worcester have produced a new book aimed at helping teachers and other education professionals to understand the concept of inclusion.

Published by Routledge, and entitled Understanding Inclusion – Core Concepts, Policy and Practice, the book is underpinned by the latest research in this field and challenges readers to think about being inclusive in its broadest sense.

The book explores a number of crucial aspects of inclusion, including: aspirations and social mobility, gender equality and diversity, perceptions of ability and disability, global perspectives, religion and belief, identity, leadership, social inclusion and class and barriers to learning.

Each chapter features case studies, opportunities to reflect on real life experience, and research members of the team have conducted, some of which is being published for the first time.

It is particularly aimed at students on Education Studies courses or similar, but also those about to embark on a career in teaching and those established in the profession.

Fourteen colleagues in the Centre for Education and Inclusion, within the University’s Institute of Education, have contributed to the book, which builds on the University’s extensive experience in this area, which includes the development of two uniquely inclusive facilities, The Hive and the University of Worcester Arena.

Dr Richard Woolley, Deputy Head of the Institute of Education at the University, edited the book.

“Thinking about how we include others, and how we appreciate one another’s differences, is an important part of appreciating and valuing those around us. We are all different, distinctive and unique. Appreciating each other’s diversity can help us support one another and enable one another to reach our potential,” he said.

Ann Jordan, Head of the University’s Institute of Education, said: “Understanding Inclusion has been written by members of the Centre for Education and Inclusion, drawing on their shared interest in and commitment to inclusion, and reflecting their diverse and varied experiences. Each author draws on their experience in the field of education, with examples from different locations around the world. This book shows the variety of expertise within the Institute of Education at the University of Worcester, and reflects the university’s commitment to valuing diversity and difference.”
