Top National Teaching Award for Two University Lecturers

Two lecturers at the University of Worcester have been awarded National Teaching Fellowships by the Higher Education Academy, it has been announced today

This is the top award for those teaching at universities across the country – with just 55 awarded across the entire country.

Maggie Andrews, Professor of Cultural History, and Rachel Barrell, Course Leader for the University’s Primary Initial Teacher Education programme, have both been honoured for their exceptional educational work.

Mrs Barrell added: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured to have received a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy. For me the award is a recognition of my passion and commitment to the student experience through working in partnership and collaboration.

“I would like to thank the University for nominating and supporting me through the process and also for the recognition of my work in primary initial teacher education and student engagement. I am also honoured to work with such inspirational and professional trainee teachers who will be a credit to the teaching profession in the years to come.”

Professor Andrews added: “I am thrilled and honoured to have my teaching and work with students nationally recognised. My teaching is inspired by inter-disciplinary research, engaging students with the heritage sector, local community groups and the media. I seek to give students an inspiring and nurturing learning environment in which to encounter troublesome knowledge.”

Professor David Green, the University’s Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive said, “Outstanding teaching is a top priority at the University of Worcester. We are deeply committed to inspiring our students to thrive, flourish and succeed. Rachel Barrell’s work is helping the University produce some of Britain’s very best Primary school teachers. Maggie Andrews is known around the country for her work in inspiring students and communities to take a fresh and fascinating look at vital questions in Britain’s heritage.”

The successful National Teaching Fellows (NTFs) were chosen from nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Each will receive an award of £5,000 which will be used to support their professional development in teaching and learning or aspects of pedagogy.

The scheme is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, and the Department for Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland, and is open to staff whose teaching or support roles enhance the student learning experience at institutions in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
