Piet Grobler
Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in Illustration
Institute of Humanities & Creative Arts
Piet Grobler is Course Leader for Illustration. His teaching covers various fields within illustration, whilst his practice as an illustrator is focused on picture book and editorial illustration. He is the illustrator of 75 books, of which 14 have been translated into languages as diverse as Frisian and Korean. International recognition for his picture book illustration has included a Golden Apple award at the Biennale for Illustration in Bratislava, Slovakia and a Silver Medal in the Japanese Noma Concours competition. His participation in international events related to picture books has included panel discussions or presentations at the book fairs of Berlin, Gothenburg and London and conferences of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) in Spain and South Africa. He is a member of the International Research Society for Children’s Literature, IBBY and the University of Worcester’s International Forum for Research in Children’s Literature. Piet’s research interests include post modernist picture book illustration and multiculturalism in picture books and graphic novels.
Teaching & Research
Research interests include Post-modernist picture books and investigating meaning in Picture books from a Translation Theory perspective.

Publications
Since 1995 Piet has been specializing in editorial illustration and picture book illustration. He has been working for several South African newspapers and magazines and has published 70 books. Several were translated – some titles into 10 languages. He currently publishes with Frances Lincoln (London), Lemniscaat (Rotterdam), Groundwood(Toronto) and Human& Rousseau(Cape Town)
