Phil Collins trained as a secondary science teacher at Worcester in the late 1960s. He spent all of his 32 year school teaching career in Worcestershire and the last 20 were as a deputy head. One of his roles was being a professional mentor to student teachers and he was a member of the University’s Post Graduate Certificate in Education Course Committee. He has always had a passion for teaching science and a change in career path now sees him as one of the PGCE Secondary Science tutors in the Institute of Education.

Teaching Interests

Phil’s interests are primarily in the teaching of secondary science. He recognises the need for secure subject knowledge and has co-ordinated the Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses in physics and chemistry for PGCE students prior to starting their training year. He is one of the team that delivers the Professional Studies programme to secondary students He also teaches science to undergraduate students on the Primary Initial Teacher Education BA. He is responsible for the GCSE Science Equivalency test which is requirement for many of the Universities courses. Phil is an active STEM Ambassador and a regular supporter of the University’s outreach programme, running experiment workshops for large groups of pupils from partnership schools.

Research Interests

Phil an active contributor to the Worcester Journal of Learning and Teaching. His personal perspectives and project reports have been diverse, covering aspects such as the changing face of physics pedagogy and the difficulties experienced working within a cross curricular dimension. One of his main foci has been the recruitment and retention of science teachers and he has presented on the subject at two Association for Science Education National Conferences.
