Course overview

The newly developed PGCE in Computer Science at the University of Worcester will provide you with the opportunity to train to teach in this fast moving curriculum area. Recent government analysis for economic growth has shown that future teachers need to equip their pupils with a deeper understanding of the underlying principles of how a computer works. The course provides you with a chance to inspire the next generation of technology leaders, innovators and programmers. You will be trained to teach the concepts of computational thinking. The course consists of university based sessions (which make up approximately a third of the time) and teaching practice in two of our excellent partner schools. While on teaching practice you will be supported by an experienced ICT/computing mentor. You will be trained to teach computer science to pupils in the 11–16 with post-16 enhancement.

David Hunt

David joined the university in September 2013 to launch the new Computer Science PGCE course. He brings 22 years of experience working in a range of schools, as a teacher and faculty leader for Technology, ICT and Computing. Recent experience also includes teaching on a Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course and a Google Symposium for ICT teachers. David is keen to be involved in new initiatives in this fast paced subject area and involves his trainee teachers in cutting edge opportunities.

The university sessions are taught in a way that models effective teaching strategies. You will need to consider how to teach the principles of computer science as well as developing your personal skill set which will enable you to challenge and motivate your pupils in this dynamic curriculum area. The university sessions prepare trainees to become confident, effective and reflective teachers as you will undertake considerable practical work to increase your knowledge of a range of software tools that are used in schools, as well as theoretical considerations such as ethical, environmental and legal issues. You will discuss the place of computer science in the curriculum and the migration of the subject from ICT. You will continue to develop your own subject knowledge throughout the course and reflect on what it is to be a computational thinker.

Your analytical, communication and teamwork skills will provide a focus for your personal development. Trainees complete placements in two schools where they work with their mentors to develop their professional practice. The university works closely with the schools to support the trainees’ development.

During the course you will be supported to:

  • Develop programming skills appropriate for use in schools.
  • Understand the examination requirements for qualifications GCSE and A-level.
  • Learn to use ICT effectively within the classroom and the associated classroom management skills in this specialist area.
  • Acquire and apply creative and technical skills, in a range of computer science contexts to solve problems. 
  • Develop a range of assessment strategies to enable pupils to make progress.
  • Acquire positive behaviour management skills.
  • Update and extend your practical problem solving skills.
  • Learn to plan, prepare and teach engaging lessons.
  • Produce resources and materials to aid your teaching.
  • Develop an awareness of barriers to learning and become familiar with a range of strategies to overcome them.
  • Develop a critical awareness of your own performance based upon evidence from a variety of sources.

You need to meet the statutory requirements for entry into teaching.

These are a good honours degree (2.2 or above) in a related subject area and GCSE Mathematics and English. Where candidates have significant experience in a related subject area and a degree in another discipline they may be eligible to apply and should contact the tutor for advice

Computer science teacher training scholarships

BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has teacher training scholarships worth £25,000 available to computer science trainees starting their teacher training in the 2014/15 academic year. A 25 per cent premium will be paid to School Direct trainees whose training is based in a school where more than 35 per cent of pupils are eligible for free school meals.

The scholarship will be instead of the standard bursary, but trainees who are not awarded the scholarship will continue to be eligible for the standard bursaries.

BCS is looking for outstanding individuals who are passionate about computer science and have the potential to become inspirational teachers. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of school level computer science. Scholars will have access to BCS membership and early career mentoring opportunities with schools, universities and major employers. All other trainees will be eligible for a standard bursary based on their degree classification. A first class degree or a 2:1 will qualify for £20,000 and a 2:2 degree will qualify for £15,000.
